This happens very often; you are probably targeted because you are a top member of the team. The reason is because you have more technical expertise, and it takes something else (charm, aggressiveness, back-stabbing, taking your credit) to move ahead of you. The goal is always the same: more money and a promotion.

Don't let it bother you, it is not your fault and it happens to lots of people. Focus on the technical aspect since that's where you will shine. Next time you find some mistakes, volunteer to fix those mistakes publically, explain how you are fixing them so others can help make sure you are doing it correctly (and know about it). Then privately tell your boss that you have concerns over the quality from this person, which is why you didn't want his help before. Since you are a good teammate, you would be happy to help check the work from this technically weak team member if your boss is interested, to make the project better.
