Next time you find some mistakes, volunteer to fix those mistakes publically, explain how you are fixing them so others can help make sure you are doing it correctly (and know about it). Then privately tell your boss that you have concerns over the quality from this person, which is why you didn't want his help before. Since you are a good teammate, you would be happy to help check the work from this technically weak team member if your boss is interested, to make the project better.
