Have to say that I only agree to a certain extent.  It all depends on the specialty areas and how one keeps up marketable skills.  

Even if you want to be your own boss, you still needs the guts and skills to survive and make a kill or kills when you have to.  

Therefore, you will need to constantly polish yourself to ensure that you are still shining and be prepared and ready to market yourself to a new potential buyer (be it yourself or another boss) with some unique value-added factors you can bring on the table.
