It is time for you to fly solo.  However, it will be chanllenging.  One big challenge I can see now is that you don't have a strong-minded boss backing you up anymore.  There will be a lot more chances people say NO to you, i.e. voice their disagreement.  You will need to learn to handle that.  It is really no small task. 
I like your way of thinking when you evaluate if you are fit for the position - you are looking at what kunique contribution you can make to the company, instead of what benifit you will get.  That is the right way to go.  In my opinion, once you make your contribution, other things will fall into places...You may still need to ask, but you will get it.
