What I suggest the OP to do is to still fulfill the duty.  Do what is required for you to do within you job description.  However, if they denied you the title, they shouldn't expect you to contriibute for free for what other people should do.  
That is all.  Everything is still ethical, but you don't go out of you way to help them.  If they mess up, it is their problem.
