Especially when you discuss a major technical issue, managers of different levels may come to the conference too.  The room may be full and the actual technical team is sitting 2 or 3 rows behind them.  You spent 3 , 4 hours there but did not accomplish anything because the technical discussion was derailed to commercial discussion and management discussion (schedule...etc) by the managers.
