I asked for another raise in 3 years and did not get it. My boss made an excuse that the big boss seldom approved a raise to anyone. Later, I got an offer, turned it down already, and told the big boss causually when I ran into her in a meeting. Two days later, my boss said that the big boss had approved my raise and told my boss that my department should try its best to keep me. I continued to get all-star treatment because my work made my boss look good, and made his boss look better based on customers' feedback.
The moral of the story is 1)This "counter offer" which was not expected, worked only because I happened to have a good big boss to like me and influenced my boss; 2)I will never take an counter offer, too risky.
