Don't take it too personally, most Esl can never have small chat

Native speakers. There is so many histories, literatures, arts, news, politics and sports we were not in the fashion while we lived in totally different environment. But don't feel hopeless as we have a lot iof advantages average peers cannot keep up with easily too-- hardworking, high iq etc... Spend half an hour or more every day watch local and national news, or read aloud small articles - like life section on newspaper or magazines, as language style can be very different from business or technical writings . try to read with your kids if they are at or above grade three level: their chapter books are great for language learning and have a huge sense of humor most of the time. Try to understand your boss's interests, family and ask questions indicates you care about him/her and never bad mouth your boss with anyone in the office or even in your mind. Use jokes or smiles whenever appropriate. Try also to have some personal hobbies: either it is a form of art or sports or whatever and get deep understanding in that area, it might become a popular topic between you and your peers . In the end, a job is a way you make money so you can enjoy life. Don't beat yourself too hard when it is not a good fit. Never burn any bridge, and never compromise your basic rights as a human being. Next time if someone say so you probably should joke "should we go see a relationship counsellor"? It takes a lot of efforts and practise to master a foreign language. But quite often it is attitude rather than language. Always be positive, inquisitive, fun and open minded. Good luck!
