How big is your former employer? Most companies have the policy that supervisors can not comment on former employers’ performances. I suggest you call your manager and explain to him about your situation. Another approach is to contract your former employer’s HR and report this. Your former manager does not have the right to make this kind of comment when people called for reference. HR or manager can only tell future employer that you left the company voluntarily or involuntarily (terminated or fired). If you were fired due to fraud, misconducts, etc, yes,

they can say you were terminated due to misconducts however this is not your case.



 


His comments about you can bring lawsuit to the company and that is the last thing HR wants to deal with.  Good luck.
