which is not the same as manager.

Try not to expect too much from the very beginning. No one likes new boss automatically, especially when it is a add-on layer.

I used to have a technical lead, and before his coming, this position did not exist. So everyone felt the boss was creating this position for him, and the team did not really need it. So not everyone respected him right away. But he was a nice person, and looked out for his team all the same. As time past by, more and more people start to realize his technical capabilty and great personality. At the end, even the pickest member sang his praise.

True lead postion is not granted by the boss, but has to be won by oneself.
