Here are some of my experiences.
1) Generally, HQ tends to have limited chances while BU may have. My company likes to promote people having BU's experiences. After all, BUs are money makers.

2) Indeed, you can expand your experiences, skill sets, and network.

3) notice that BU's business culture may be different from the HQ's culture. BU's boss can be a very dictator though your corporate culture may be very mild.

4) You need be mentally prepared that your position will be taken by other once you leave for BUs.

5) Usually, it is not easy to get your current boss "Ok, let go".

My case was similar to yours. I overcame my boss' barrier, had indorsement from HR, went through a review committee, and finally had BU's green light. Well, all the struggle paid off. The sweet part in my case is that the compensation for my assignment is really good. Besides, I enjoyed working in BUs. I even told my sponsor that I was getting progressively interested in rotating in different BUs when he suggested me return if chances occur in ...
