Interview response - "we have several other candidates that ask

I recently relocated to east coast from Midwest, as my hu*****and moved to here for his new job. I had an interview, which seemed going well. My experience and background matched the job well. I asked how many candidates they had for this position. The interviewer told me 3, as they cannot find many other more with the specific experience that they need. He also said " You resume is very good". He gave me an employment application form to fill and send to him later. He mentioned that the "Desired Salary" must be filled, so it will not delay the progress. I put the same number, which I made in my last job (in Midwest, living cost is much lower) and emailed him the form after the interview.

One week later - Last Friday, I sent a follow-up email to ask the status. I did not expect to have any response very soon. But I did receive an email from the person 10 minutes later; he said, "Thanks for your time spent with us. We felt the salary you ask for is above this position and we have several other candidates that ask for considerably less. However, we have not closed out this position and will be discussing the candidates later this afternoon". I was surprised to receive the email like this; he wanted me to give him a lower number for desired salary. I had to email him and saying "I would appreciate the opportunity working in XXX more than salary. I put ## for desired salary as it matched my last job salary, but I understand the market is different and you have certain budget for this position. I am open and flexible." He did not email me any further. I guess they picked other candidate. I could not give them a much lower (10k or 15K) number, I came to a much more expensive city and I only asked for the same money I made before. The market is so bad now, people just lower the bar and competed with each other. I feel this employer is very cheap and they so focus on this salary issue, not paying attention to other qualification. I am 5 month pregnant now, (not showing in the interview); I will have to wait to the next year and find a better job if the economy is recovered.
