Check Engine Light is on 99 camry.Any suggestions

My 99 camry Engine Check light has been on for several weeks but my hu*****and thinks we shouldn't spend money to have it checked out. Do you happen to know what the problem might be? It has over 100,000 miles on it. A mechanic asked me to leave the car for him to check and it will take 2-3 hours. I'd feel embarrased if he found out the fault and my hu*****and doesn't want to spend money to fix it. Thanks a lot.
