as i know zutozone has been always providing free code reading. you might want to call another store to double check if it's true.

aamco is a not-so-good transmission national chain, even in their own business scope most people say they charge a lot but do a slappy job. their usual practice is - when you come in, they will say they will take the transmission out and check for $400, if no error, you only pay $400, if there is a thing wrong and they fix it for you, this $400 is a credit toward the whole cost. please make sure don't be fooled on this. the best yet never go to their shops at all.

in the event autozone doesn't read code for free, you should go to a regular auto service shop, not a transmission shop. Even a pep boys' shop isn't too bad in some cases.
