Check engine light on means mostly--bad O2 sensor. It also can be a leaking exaust pipe. In general, it means the car computer senses that there is something wrong with either the intake misture of gas and air, or exhaust-check under your car see if there is any leak. Your car probably has 2 O2 sensors. If you take it to a garage, they will replace both of them. It will cost you +-$600 depends on where they get their parts or what garage. It happend that a bad gas cap can cause the light to come on. Or even, after you filled your gas tank, you did not turn the cap tight enough. Check that and drive it for a few days see if it will go out. If not, then, bad O2 sensor is the next guess. You can buy a code reader and check/clear the code yourself, if you have time. The car normally runs just fine with the light on...just won't pass the emission test...
