【英譯唐詩】省試”湘靈鼓瑟”   (“Sprite of Xiang River Playing Psaltery” - Poem for National Examination)

善鼓雲和瑟，  Sprite of Xiang River was good at playing “Yun-He” psaltery,

常聞帝子靈。  which was well known. 

馮夷空自舞，  The river god - “Ping,Yi” couldn’t help dancing alone upon hear the tweedle,

楚客不堪聽。  While the relegated government officials couldn’t endure hearing it.

苦調淒金石，  Its tone of grief could make hard rock felt sad, 

清音入杳冥。  while its clear sound could be heard in the highest of heavens.

蒼梧來怨慕，  Even the spirit of Shun was attracted to taste the woe,

白芷動芳馨。  and the radix angelicaes were all moved to bloom.

流水傳瀟浦，  The notes flowed into everywhere of Xiaoxiang with the river water,

悲風過洞庭。  The sounds were sent to Dongting Lake by sorrowful wind.

曲終人不見，  Audience and player all disappeared once the performance finished, 

江上數峰青。  Only a couple of green peaks were left above the river.
