我想說的是在讀夠了雜書之餘，我盡量把功課學好。是不是下麵這樣好些?
Besides reading quite a lot books that wouldn't have helped me with the college entrance exam, I did my best at school.

besides似乎用的不好。

你在besides後麵用了reading，besides就當介詞用了，相當於in addition to. 你覺得reading可以當did的賓語嗎？

How about this:

I not only read quite a lot of books that... but also did my best at school.

OR

I read a quite a lot of books that...,and besides（副詞）, I did my best at school.
