Do you know what is Swiss-cheese learning?

Well, it is not about learning how to make Swiss cheese. It refers to the situation that someone barely stumbles through a course of study with a low grade such as D or C but without fully mastering the concepts. By the end of a series of such courses, there will be many "holes" in his knowledge, like Swiss cheese. According to a radio program I listened to on my way home today, this is a problem with a number of US students.
