It seems that we both speak of this Swiss-cheese learning disapprovingly.

On the other hand, this may be the only way to cover a large body of knowledge in a short time. To some degree, we all have to be generalists in many fields outside of our own specialties. I agree with you that one should be aware of one's own mastery of the subject.
