2023年,這隻熊首次被追蹤相機拍到,脖子上卡著塑料桶蓋。此後,美國自然資源部一直在尋找它。
2025年5月下旬,這隻熊再次出現在相機鏡頭中,塑料桶蓋依然牢牢卡在頸部。6月2日,自然資源部工作人員設置誘捕裝置,將其安全引入其中。誘捕成功後,工作人員通過注射使黑熊暫時失去行動能力,幾分鍾內便成功切除桶蓋。黑熊蘇醒後蹣跚離去。
野生動物生物學家安吉拉·庫亞瓦推測,佩戴這個"不適配件"可能影響了黑熊的爬樹能力。"它休息時應該更多采用仰臥或側臥姿勢。"庫亞瓦說。
諾頓稱:"我們非常驚訝,它竟能像普通黑熊一樣正常謀生。"
