乩童是一種職業，類似西方的靈媒，是道教儀式中，神明跟人或鬼魂跟人之間的媒介。泰國南部大城合艾的“九皇齋勝會”吸引了逾四十個泰南的神廟、民間組織，引吸逾三萬名遊客來參與盛會。

雖然被稱為乩童，但實際上也有年紀很大的。神明上身則稱為“起乩”，而整個過程則被稱為“扶乩”

此外，還有各種自殘式神功，乩童把各種利器，如斧頭、鐮刀等往自己的身驅、舌頭揮割及揮砍，導致全身血淋淋、非常駭人，甚至有乩童被丟入滾燙的油鍋，也許真有神明保估，乩童竟完全無痛苦狀。

據說，這些乩童看上去自殘的行為其實並不疼痛，而且傷口會很快愈合。乩童以這種看來非常駭人的行為來展現他們的神力。
