旗袍，是一種內與外和諧統一的典型民族服裝，被譽為中華服飾文化的代表。它以其流動的旋律、瀟灑的畫意與濃鬱的詩情，表現出中華女性賢淑、典雅、溫柔、清麗的性情與氣質。 那旗袍是如何而來的呢？ 旗袍的起源有人認為可追溯到春秋戰國時期的深衣。深衣自春秋戰國至漢代曾為時人所重，後世的袍服或與深衣有著一定的淵源關係。 袍服自漢代被用於朝服，袍服式樣曆代有變製，漢代深衣製袍，唐代圓領襇袍，明代直身，都是典型的寬身長袍，穿著者多為知識分子及統治階層，久而久之蔚成風尚。袍服因而代表的是一種不事生產的上層人士及文化人的清閑生活。寬衫大袍，褒衣博帶，逐漸成為中原地區衣飾文明的一種象征。 在遼、金、元及清朝等少數民族政權統治時期，合身的袍服都曾一度扮演著服飾的主角，雖然又都經曆或表現出變得寬博的過程或趨勢。清代由於曆時最長且較穩定，故袍服可視為典型服飾。 順治年間（公元1644年），清世祖入關，定都北京，繼而統一全國。隨著政權的初步穩固，開始強製實行服製改革。至此傳統的冠戴衣裳幾乎全被禁止穿戴，相傳千年的上衣下裳的服飾形製隻被保留在漢族女子家居時的著裝中。慶典場合不分男女都要著袍，各類袍服名目繁多，有朝袍、龍袍、蟒袍及常服袍等之分。 從字義解，旗袍泛指旗人（無論男女）所穿的長袍，不過隻有八旗婦女日常所穿的長袍才與後世的旗袍有著血緣關係，用作禮服的朝袍、蟒袍等習慣上己不歸為“旗袍”的範疇。從順治、嘉慶年間屢次頒布的禁令中，滿族女子違禁仿效漢族婦女裝束的風氣之盛。至清後期，亦有漢族女子效仿滿族裝束的。滿漢婦女服飾風格的悄相交融，使雙方服飾的差別日益減小，遂成為旗袍流行全國的前奏。 清朝後期，旗女所穿的長袍，衣身較為寬博，造型線條平直硬朗，衣長至腳踝。“元寶領”用得十分普遍，領高蓋住腮碰到耳，袍身上多繡以各色花紋，領、袖、襟、據都有多重寬闊的滾邊。至鹹豐、同治年間，鑲滾達到高峰時期，有的甚至整件衣服全用花邊鑲滾，以至幾乎難以辨識本來的衣料。旗女袍服的裝飾之繁瑣，幾至登峰造極的境界，此時的清王朝正為挽救危亡，清廷洋務派提出“中學為體，西學為用”的救國方略，派遣大批留學生到國外學習。在中國學生最先出現了西式學生的操衣、操帽，洋裝的輸入，提供了評判美的另一種參照係，直接影響社會服飾觀念的變更。日後旗袍演化為融貫中西的新式款型，其受西方影響的改變可說即是由此開始。 1911年辛亥革命風暴驟起，推翻了中國曆史上最後一個封建王朝，為西式服裝在中國的普及清除了政治障礙，同時也把傳統苛刻的禮教與風化觀念丟在了一邊，解除了服製上等級森嚴的種種桎桔。服裝走向平民化、國際化的自由變革，已經水到渠成，旗袍由此卸去了傳統沉重的負擔。舊式的旗女長袍既被摒棄，新式旗袍則在亂世妝扮中開始釀成。 此時的時裝流行中心早已由蘇、揚移至上海。上海又是婦女尋求解放的重鎮。傳教士、商人、革命黨人競相創辦女學，掀起了一股女權運動浪潮，尋求解放的社會大氣候蕩滌著服飾妝扮上的陳規陋習，趨向於簡潔，色調力求淡雅，注重體現女性的自然之美。旗袍最初是以馬甲的形式出現，馬甲長及足背，加在短襖上。後將長馬甲改成有袖的式樣，也就成了新式旗袍的雛形。據說得風氣之先的上海女學生是旗袍流行的始俑者。當時的女學生作為知識女性的代表，成為社會的理想形象，她們是文明的象征、時尚的先導，以至社會名流時髦人物都紛紛作女學生裝扮。
