80年代是香港電視行業的黃金時期，亦是TVB人才最鼎盛的年代，台前幕後精英輩出，TVB亦於此時動用全台精英製作了多套經典劇集，尤以改篇自金庸小說的武俠劇最為成功。
TVB 1983年版的《神鵰俠侶》，無論演員陣容或幕後班底均是空前絕後之選，更曾創下歷史性的60多點收視佳績，是當年全台收視之冠。此劇的成功，與其選角之稱職不無關係，每一個角色均宛如從書中跳出來一樣。

《神鵰俠侶》作為金庸的經典之作，當然亦曾多次被改篇成電視劇，並成為其中一套最受歡迎的作品。《神鵰俠侶》是金庸另一巨著《射鵰英雄傳》的延續篇，主要講述一代大俠楊過的成長歷程及他與小龍女盪氣迴腸的愛情故事；全劇以「情」貫穿，扣人心弦，劇中人物至情至性，愛恨分明。
楊過與小龍女的英雄美人配
由當年稚氣未脫、正氣得來又帶點叛逆氣質的劉德華，扮演由固執倔強少年演變成沉鬱內斂的神鵰大俠楊過，實屬不二之選。劉德華本身有著楊過的特質，加上其生動自然的演繹及俊朗的外型，使他一炮而紅。陳玉蓮演起外冷內熱、冰清玉潔、不食人間煙火的小龍女更是入木三分。陳玉蓮不是會令人驚艷的美女，但她外型清麗脫俗，一直行事低調，有點超然物外的態度，無論言行舉止均活脫脫是小龍女的化身，難怪原作者金庸也認為陳玉蓮是最完美的小龍女扮演者。而劉德華與陳玉蓮版本的《神鵰俠侶》，也被金庸形容為最忠於原著的一部。
楊過外表雖有點風流，但骨子裡卻是個情種，對小龍女更是萬分癡情；小龍女長於古墓中，不懂人間禮節，唯對楊過情真意切。問世間情為何物？或許可從這對一代俠侶身上找到答案。

劉德華首次邂逅陳玉蓮，並不是在拍《神鵰俠侶》時，而是在香港電台。那時劉德華與一班朋友創作了一個名為《蛻變》的劇本並得了獎，香港電台拿了劇本去拍電視劇，找來陳玉蓮當女主角，因此造就了兩人第一次見麵的機會。陳玉蓮給劉德華的第一個感覺，是漂亮得來帶點鄉土氣息，寧靜舒服，與世無爭。多年後，劉德華接受訪問，亦表示陳玉蓮是第一個、亦是唯一一個令他戲假情真的女主角。他說這個「姑姑」就像天仙下凡一樣，他每天最開心的事就是返TVB開工，因為可以見到他心目中的「姑姑」。因此，拍攝《神鵰俠侶》那段日子，亦是他在TVB最開心的時光。整整五個月裏，日以繼夜與同一班好戲之人合作，大家抱著同一個目標，互相扶持。他甚至愛上每一個角色，除小龍女外，還有郭靖、黃蓉、周伯通、郭芙、郭襄、公孫綠萼、陸無雙，甚至李莫愁和金輪法王。他認為這樣的選角，就算不是絕後，也是空前。相信劉德華這樣的形容，沒有人會反對。
也許因為全情投入，劉德華演起對「姑姑」萬般癡情的「過兒」份外絲絲入扣，尤以呆等「姑姑」十六年那一段最為觸動觀眾心靈，戲裡戲外均可感到他對小龍女的深情。陳玉蓮的小龍女當然亦不會被比下去，她那股獨有的清麗脫俗、超然物外的氣質，環顧整個娛樂圈根本無人能及，演起小龍女當然亦份外稱職。

除兩位主角為不二之選外，其他角色選角之佳亦可謂空前絕後。
梁家仁的郭靖，神態與舉止均很傳神，其武術功架更不用多說，是他繼《天龍八部》的喬峰後另一佳作。

歐陽珮珊的中年黃蓉亦是各版本的《神鵰俠侶》中最稱職的一位，端裝賢淑且具甜美聰慧的氣質，除了風姿綽約的歐陽珮珊外，實在不作他人選。
