大方縣位於貴州省西北部的烏蒙山區，距貴陽200多公裏。全縣人口90萬，除漢族外，還有彝、苗、白、仡佬、蒙古、布依、滿等少數民族。全縣麵積3500多平方公裏，轄10個鎮、8個鄉、18個民族鄉，縣府駐大方鎮。農業主產玉米、油菜、馬鈴薯、水稻等，特產有生漆、皺椒、烤煙。區域經濟落後，交通、通訊、能源等基礎設施薄弱，農民生活非常貧困。

我們要講的第一所小學就在貓場鎮狗吊岩村。狗吊岩村位於該鎮西端，屬於喀斯特地貌，沒有成片的可耕地。村子距鎮上18公裏，是崎嶇陡峭的機耕便道，不通班車。全村今年3月才通電，且供電不能保證。至今不通有線電話。

2002年暑期，一個大四學生從千裏之外的武漢來到這裏搞社會調查，他走進了岩洞，給孩子們講了許多大山之外的事情。
他的名字叫徐本禹，當時是華中農業大學農業經濟專業的學生。當暑期結束返校時，孩子們一直把他送到好幾公裏外。每個孩子都流下了眼淚。一個孩子仰著頭問道：“大哥哥，你還要來嗎？”
徐本禹噙著眼淚，點了點頭。他沒有告訴孩子們，他正在準備考研究生。

徐本禹以372分的優異成績考取了研究生，他的導師是華中農業大學經濟貿易學院院長王雅鵬教授。同時，他因為學業優秀獲得6000元國家獎學金。但當天晚上，他徹夜未眠。貓場鎮狗吊岩村孩子們的眼光一直在他腦海中閃現。
徐本禹出身在山東聊城一個貧困農民家裏。他到華中農業大學上學時，甚至沒有一件禦寒的冬衣。是同寢室一個學生的母親給了他一件夾衣。這是他第一次得到別人的溫暖。今天回想起來，他說，是這件夾衣改變了他的價值觀。當時他隻有一個念頭：別人幫助了我，我一定要幫助別人。

就在那個無法入眠的夜晚，徐本禹作出了一生中最重要的一個決定：回到貓場鎮狗吊岩村幫助那些孩子。
當他把這個決定通過電話告訴父親時，電話的那一端，父親哭了。長久的啜泣之後，父親用發顫的聲音說：“全家尊重你的選擇，孩子，你去吧，我們沒有意見……”
當他把這個決定告訴學院領導時，大家沉默了，都不敢正視他的眼睛。
華中農業大學研究生處反複討論，作出了一個決定：支持並為他保留兩年的研究生學曆。

他的事跡感動了許多人，也吸引了許多追隨者。可是，狗吊岩村實在太窮太苦了。不僅物質文化生活極度貧乏，而且這裏是一個封閉的信息孤島，不通公路，不通電話，晚上靠油燈照明，連寄一封信也要走18公裏崎嶇的山路才能找到郵所。而文化背景的巨大差距造成的心理和話語障礙又使他們久久不能融入這個環境。追隨他的誌願者一個一個地離去。
2004年4月，他回到母校華中農業大學做了一場報告。誰也沒料到他在台上講的第一句話是：“我很孤獨，很寂寞，內心十分痛苦，有幾次在深夜醒來，淚水打濕了枕頭，我快堅持不住了……”本來以為會聽到激昂的豪言壯語的學生們驚呆了，沉默了。許多人的眼淚奪眶而出。
報告會後，他又返回了狗吊岩村，每天沿著那崎嶇的山路，去給孩子們上課！

徐本禹倍感孤獨的背後，還有一段鮮為人知的隱情。作為義務支教的先行者，徐本禹的行為屬於自發的“個人行為”，因此，他並沒有被列入團中央的西部誌願者行動計劃，隻是一個“體製外”的誌願者。在我們這個“組織”決定一切的國家，這就意味著徐本禹得不到體製內西部誌願者的生活補助，成為一個完全沒有生活來源的人。他的行動也不可能被主流媒體按“報道方針”進行宣傳報道。換句話說，他很難得到社會的關注。這使他注定成為一個孤獨的誌願者。

幸虧共青團貴州省委、大方縣委組織部、大方團縣委和華中農業大學給了他援助和支持。貴州團省委後來將他補入本省誌願者名單，每個月發給他500元生活補助（列入團中央的每月800元），這才將他從衣食無著的困境者解脫出來。徐本禹每月節衣縮食，將這500元錢省出大半，用來資助山區的孩子上學。僅在貓場鎮中學，他就資助了32位貧困學生。為了能與外界聯係，他買了一部舊手機（愛立信T17）,但隻用來發短信，從不撥打和接聽電話。他付不起更多的手機資費。

另外兩名誌願者是半年前由貴州團省委派來的，團省委此舉是為了讓徐本禹不至於太孤單。半年來，他們三人在這極其偏僻的大山中體驗著自己人生最沉重的履曆。

徐本禹想轉到另一個鄉，叫大水鄉。在大水鄉考察的所見所聞，隻能用“震驚”二字來形容。貓場鎮與這裏相比，可算是天堂了。
大水彝族苗族布依族鄉是2001年新建的民族鄉，位於大方縣東部，距縣城67公裏。全鄉總人口12600多人，其中少數民族占76％。全鄉耕地麵積12300多畝，平均海拔近1600米，屬喀斯特地貌。農業主產玉米、馬鈴薯、大豆、烤煙。該鄉經濟十分落後，據鄉黨委書記介紹，去年全鄉人均收入上報為1200元，實際隻有500元。全鄉今年5月基本通電。除鄉政府外，各村至今不通電話。2002年以前沒有通往縣城的公路，現雖然通了公路，但路況極差，屬於機耕便道。
圖為大水鄉一個漢子正從街上匆匆走過。他趕了兩個小時的山路是為了賣點玉米。如果運氣好的話，他可能賣得15元現金。除了買兩斤鹽回家，剩下的錢要攢起來做孩子下學期的學雜費。如果一個暑假攢不夠70元，孩子將輟學。

大水鄉共有14所小學，其中公辦小學3所，村辦小學11所，私辦小學4所。全鄉在校小學生2340人，教師103人，其中正式教師僅54人，而初中或高中學曆的正式教師占了40％。代課教師以初中生為主。每個小學生每年繳納學費、雜費、書本費140元，但仍有不少農戶無力繳納，致使孩子輟學。代課教師主要靠微薄雜費維持收入，每人每月工資110元。如果學生欠費，則工資難以保障。

阿拉重點考察了大水鄉的大石村。從下學期起，徐本禹將轉到這裏支教一年。大石村距鄉政府所在地18公裏，至今未通公路。全村村民主要是彝族，另有兩戶布依族。通過深入走訪農戶，阿拉了解到去年全村人均收入僅300元，村民辛勤勞作一年，收獲糧食僅夠吃半年，不足部分靠政府救濟。村民主要種植玉米和馬鈴薯作為口糧。現金收入主要靠養雞（每戶養雞隻有五六隻）和去小煤窯背煤。村長和村支書月工資70元，由鄉財政補助。
