A Birthday Letter to My Father-in-Law

Dear Father-in-law,

On the occasion of your eightieth birthday, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincerest wishes and heartfelt gratitude to you.

In 2003, I had the great honor of marrying your daughter. In the early summer of 2004, we returned to China, and you and Aunt He hosted a grand yet warm wedding celebration for us at the Xiangtan Hotel. On that day, we sang “Planting a Small Peach Tree in Front of the Door,” a song specially written for us by Aunt He. The enthusiastic applause from our guests remains vivid in my memory to this day.

During our wedding leave, you took me to visit the old streets of Xiangtan and accompanied us on a hike up Yuelu Mountain. Those moments allowed me to feel the warmth of family and your thoughtful, attentive care. I spent an unforgettable and wonderful summer, and that experience continues to warm my heart even now.

In 2006, you and Aunt He visited the United States for the first time to attend the graduation ceremony of your daughter and me at the University of Arkansas. I still remember how the gifts you so carefully prepared, together with your warm smile, made our celebration truly complete.

In 2008, you visited the United States for the second time, when I was pursuing my doctoral studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Albany, New York. You and Aunt He often cooked with us, chatted with us, and shared the small moments of everyday life. Those days filled me with deep happiness and strengthened my appreciation for the warmth of family.

Through the time we spent together, I have learned many precious qualities from you, and I have always strived to be a son-in-law who would make you proud. You are a man who loves his family and who is strong and courageous.

I have heard many stories of your life. You have endured countless hardships, yet you were never defeated by them. After coming to the United States, you adapted quickly to a new environment and persevered in learning English and computer skills. Your determination and courage have continually inspired me and have become a true example in my life.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish you a very happy birthday, peace and joy, and good health. May every day of your life be filled with warmth and happiness.

          With deepest respect and affection,

                         Your loving son-in-law,
                                                          Jesse
