4th Xmas In The Trenches

Donetska oblast Last night, the Russian Federation launched one of the most brutal attacks on Ukraine since the war began. Over 650 drones and other missiles of various types have targeted the entire country, aiming to further weaken energy production and break the morale of the Ukrainian civilian population.
Blackouts are so frequent that they make it difficult to access any aspect of daily life that requires internet connectivity or power. Alla and I spent Christmas in the trenches with the guys from the 95th Brigade. It was our fourth Christmas at war. No one in their lives would ever have imagined spending even one, yet this was already our fourth. We spent the first on the Orikhiv front in Zaporizhia, the second in Bakhmut, in Donetsk, the third in Sumy, when Operation Kursk was in full swing, and now we are here, in Donbas. Where the fate of Ukraine and the free world is being decided. Pokrovsk is holding, and the Russians are suffering horrendous losses. Today alone, between morning and afternoon, they lost over 200 men and a dozen armored vehicles, including tanks and other armored attack and troop transport vehicles. As weve said, in Kupiansk, they also suffered unimaginable losses because the Ukrainians neutralized most of the enemy cells, reestablishing control over 90% of the city.
So what did the Russians do? They launched a diversionary offensive against the village of Hrabivske, located in the easternmost part of the Sumy region, on the border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Last Thursday, about a hundred Russian attackers and raiders stormed that village, taking all 52 civilians and 13 Ukrainian soldiers hostage. Since the town is small, it didnt take long. In a couple of hours, the Russians gathered them all in the local church and then, on the evening of December 20th, deported them to the Russian Federation. After visiting Yahidne and the atrocities committed by the fascist butchers (who similarly kidnapped the local population, eventually locking them up in a gulag where they perpetrated unspeakable abominations), all that remains is to hope that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will be swift.
La Ragione is a widely read newspaper abroad. Here in Ukraine, it has a truly remarkable following and is widely shared among both Italian-speaking Ukrainians and the Italian community living in Ukraine. Through translation systems and platforms that translate our articles, we are also widely read in many other countries. So much so that we have received significant citations and mentions that have flattered us far beyond our merits. Last week, even US General David Petraeus confirmed our assessments, reposting a post by a prominent American analyst who mentioned us by name. In reality, we have no merit other than being here. We have always been here and will continue to be here as long as we have the strength. Closeness to reality is essential, and, conversely, distance is felt especially in the news.
What Im keen to remind our friends following usin Italyis the importance of firsthand, authentic, and verified news from the field. In recent days, weve witnessed disgraceful statements even from Italian ministers and newspapers that support historical falsehoods and lies told by Russian propaganda. On this fourth Christmas at war, we want to remember that we can and must react to all this, and that everyone, even remotely, has the tools to do so.We have more computing power in our pockets than it took to land a man on the moon, yet many end up using it to refute even that reality. Used well, tools like a smartphone can keep propaganda and fake news at bay. Were not asking you to come here, but to fight the war on information from the comfort of your own home, to isolate fake news and prevent its proliferation. Its a task everyone can and must undertake, because the war isnt just here. Here, we fight with weapons in the trenches, but there, were fighting the war on information, and were still doing too little to defend ourselves.
