Chernivtsi Referring to the 90 billion EU loan, an Italian newspaper ran a Sunday headline:Zelensky costs us 220 each. A few days earlier, those same pages also justified the statement by Italian Vice President Matteo Salvini, who said,If Hitler and Napoleon failed to bring Moscow to its knees with their Russian campaigns, its unlikely Kaja Kallas, Macron, Starmer, and Merz will succeed.
Reproduced almost verbatim by another Italian Kremlin mouthpiece, those headlines arent just obscene: theyre, above all, false. Wrong in their numbers, method, logic, political message, and historical reconstruction.
Lets even assume we wanted to divide that figure by the European population. Without even bending the arithmetic to populism, 90 billion divided by approximately 450 million EU citizens equals just over 200 per capita, not 220.
But thats not even the point.
No European citizen will pay 200 euros today, tomorrow, or through a Ukraine bill. This is a common debt, spread over decades, like any other European Union financial instrument. It is a loan, not a grant, and Ukraine will be required to repay it only when the Russian Federation repays reparations for the war Vladimir Putin unleashed in Europe.
Not Volodymyr Zelensky.
Between inflation, the industrial crisis, eroded real wages, devalued savings, and bills which we paid immediately the Russian war has already cost Europeans thousands of euros each. If Russia were to win in Ukraine, the structural instability at the EUs borders would lead to even higher permanent military spending. By keeping this eventuality at bay,the Ukrainian resistance led by Volodymyr Zelensky if anything, reduces the cost of the war for Europe.
Reversing this sequence is not opinion, but intellectual dishonesty.
The EU is supporting Ukraine to limit the damage, defending its borders and interests after suffering an energy, economic, industrial, and military shock caused by Russian aggression.It is Moscow that has brought a colonial and imperialist war to Europe. Not the other way around.
The financial instrument adopted by the EU is a loan, not a gift. It is a joint debt, with multi-year repayment and interest; frozen Russian assets guarantee a portion. It does notcostItalians as if it were lost money, and Zelensky receives nothing. The funds are disbursed in tranches, under the control of the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.
The Ukrainian resistance is not a source of expenditure but the consequence of an illegitimate invasion. Supporting it is not just a moral duty: it is a way to defend Europe in line with international law.
The Russian war, which is the cause, defies all logic and rules and has already cost every Italian thousands of euros.
Likewise, the logical and historical reversal with which they attempt to justify a very serious and doubly incorrect statement made by a minister of the Italian Republic, like Salvini, is astonishing.
Both the Napoleonic campaign of 1812 and Operation Barbarossa of 1941 took place mainly in present-day Ukraine: in central and eastern Ukraine, the Dnipro basin, the Donbas, Crimea, and the Ukrainian steppes. Less than a month ago, I documented in avideorecorded in Moshchun how,alongside the Second World War trenches, Ukrainians dug trenches to defend Kyiv in 2022.
A few months earlier, Iexplainedhow, together with a partisan from Sumy armed with a metal detector, Alla Perdei and I found coins, bullets, and buttons belonging to the Nazi-Fascist soldiers sent in vain to invade Ukraine.With its territory devastated, millions of civilians dead, and cities transformed into battlefields, it was Ukraine that exhausted and shattered the offensive capacity of those invaders.Saying that Russia resisted is a propaganda oversimplification that ignores geopolitical reality.Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler werent stopping a Russian advance: they were invading Ukraine to push further east.
Its not true that no one ever stopped Russia. Whats true, instead, is that those who tried to conquer Ukraine including Russia itself always ended up losing the war.
History answers Minister Salvini and those newspapers.
Tsarist Russia suffered a resounding defeat in the 19041905 war when it attempted to expand into Manchuria and Korea, and Japan inflicted a complete and overwhelming loss. The Russian fleet was destroyed at Tsushima, the empire lost Port Arthur, and was humiliated and forced to sign a peace. The following year, the 1905 revolution occurred.
In 19391940, the USSR attempted to invade Finland. It was the Russian army that suffered enormous losses, exposing its inefficiency. A failure so severe that it made Adolf Hitler realize that the Red Army was far from invincible.The Nazi-Fascist troops ultimately crumbled in Ukraine.Lasting 10 years (19791989), the Afghan War was a total strategic defeat, ending with the collapse of the USSR in 1991.
In Ukraine, Russia has already been stopped strategically: it wanted to conquer Kyiv, overthrow the government, and annex the entire country. How it went is clear to all.
Therefore,Russia can indeed be stopped, and it loses every time it attempts wars of expansion. The myth of its invincibility is propaganda, not history.And the Italians who were stopped in Ukraine should remember this best of all.
