Live from Ukraine ????????
Hajsyn As we entered this small town in the Vinnytsia oblast, we came across the effigies of 146 heroes born there who died defending Ukraine from Russian aggression, arranged in a continuous line along the edge of the main road. The ground behind the last stand had recently been dug up to make space for more identical memorials, with several bouquets of flowers already neatly placed in those hollows.
The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman just reiterated the cynical statement made Saturday by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, according to whichthe Russian Federation does not strike civilian targets.
Between those two nonsense, the reality is that 595 drones and 48 other Russian missiles of various types have been rained down over the past few hours on targets like the Kyiv Cardiological Institute, the Polish Embassy in Ukraine, a nursery school in Chernihiv, the grain hubs of Odesa, a bus full of civilians in Kharkiv, an ATB department store in Zaporizhzhia, a bread-making company in Khmelnytskyj, the car in which a family was traveling in Sumy, and one of the most crowded neighborhoods of Kherson, where the Russian air force also dropped 15 glide bombs.
The 12-year-old girl fatally crushed by a concrete slab in her Kyiv home; the nearby, doctors, nurses, and patients who were already fighting for their lives from causes other than war; the passengers evacuated from other areas, barbarously destroyed by the Russians, headed with their few remaining belongings toward an uncertain destination; the rescuers, hit in yet another double-tap, rushed frantically to dig through the rubble of the Zaporizhzhia supermarket; the tens of thousands of customers in Chernihiv who were left without water and electricity: according to Russian diplomats, all of these were consideredlegitimate military targets.
The blackout in Bilhorod caused by a Ukrainian strike targeting the energy plants fueling the Russian war effort was instead described ascaused by bad weather, according to thealternative narrativepromoted by the Kremlin widely featured in Italy by complacent media, despite dozens of videos circulating online that were filmed by ordinary Russians from their windows, who, having seen the attack live, ironically thank the heavens for the Ukrainians good aim. The fire at the Feodosia oil plant, triggered by similarly precise Ukrainian strikes, was insteadcaused by welding work, according to those same Russian propaganda outlets.
In Zaporizhia alone, at least 40 people were killed during Saturdays violent attack. In Kyiv, approximately thirty civilians were affected by the strike, and another seventy were injured across the rest of the country. Some areas have seen Russian missiles destroy entire neighborhoods, which now, in drone footage, appear as completely gutted ghost towns. Interior Minister Ihor Volodymyrovych Klimenko reported that at least 100 civilian targets were hit on Saturday.
The Russians, however, have been attacking for another 1,314 days and have recently increased their presence in NATO airspace. When Ukrainian resistance leader Volodymyr Zelensky pointed outthe Russians method for launching drones in European skies from oil tankersoff the Baltic Sea explaining that they could do the same in the Mediterranean and even threaten countries like Italy a man who has madea world upside downhis campaign slogan said that it is instead theperfidious and dangerous president of Ukraine who is trying to involve NATO and the EU in his war.
Scrolling such news in from to of a parade of effigies representing the 146 heroes of Haisyn is embarrassing. The graves dug in front of the tombstones of those heroes reveal the harsh reality thatsacrifice continues not as news, but as a wound within the community, destined to spread further. The imbalance between the significance of such dedication and the recklessness with which words are used elsewhere shifting blame for the war onto those warning of danger facing the West is almost grotesque. That alternative truth favored by certain complacent media, even in Italy, collapses when confronted with facts and victims of the war that are anything but opinions.
