Bohuslav The situation at the front is becoming increasingly dire for the Russian army, which is now partially encircled even on the northern front at Sumy, in Oleksiivka. As Ive already described in detail on these pages, it has been forced to retreat from nearby Kostiantynivka to the border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, and now almost entirely from Volodymyrivka as well.
Zelensky arrived in Donetsk to congratulate those defending Ukraine who, participating in thevictorious counteroffensive in Dobropillia, encircled the Russian Armed Forces in at least three locations, driving them from those territories in Donbas and thus thwarting all of Russias offensive operations this summer.
All enemy groups attempting to enter the Dobropillia and Pokrovsk areas are being destroyed by our guys who, step by step, are liberating our land,the Ukrainian president emphasized, reeling off impressive figures:Since the beginning of our counteroffensive, more than 160 km2 of Ukrainian land has been liberated and another 170 km2 have been cleared. Seven settlements have been liberated and another nine have been cleared of their occupiers.
Nearly one hundred of them have been taken prisoner.
Over 2,500 have been neutralized and 1,300 have died.
These are alarming numbers, especially considering thatsuch a rapid response happened in just over a couple of weeks despite massive military efforts from the Russian side.
An official statement from the Ukrainian General Staff further detailed the current front-line situation, explaining that in the last 24 hours alone, Russian forces dropped 93 guided aerial bombs, carried out one missile attack and 67 air strikes, deployed 1,876 kamikaze drones, and conducted 3,219 bombing raids against Ukrainian Armed Forces positions.Ukrainian defenders have repelled every enemy advance, causing additional losses. One of those Russian glide bombs, a Kab-250, struck the residential area of Kostiantynivka yesterday morning around 10:00 a.m., killing five civilians: two women aged 62 and 65, and three men aged 65, 67, and 74.
The Russians keep striking blindly, and the Ukrainians keep resisting, hoping that someone in the West will decide to stop funding Russian terror. The general outrage feels even stronger now that the European Union is preparing its 19th round of (secondary) economic sanctions against Moscow.
Even now that Russian drones are raining down on them, they wont stop subsidizing their production:this is one of the many comments we overheard while standing at a kiosk where some soldiers were taking refreshments before returning to their positions in the rear.They have Russian missiles pointed at them from Kaliningrad and Belarus, that is, their borders, yet they do nothing to take away their fuel. In fact, they buy even more because what they have blocked at the door is being passed through the window, purchased from countries like India and Turkey.
In Pokrovsk alone, the Ukrainians neutralized 160 occupiers yesterday, killing nearly a hundred of them.Their uniforms still stained with blood, many exhausted soldiers spoke openly with us, venting their understandable frustration.
Most English speakers refer to the West asspineless.
Others use Ukrainian terms that, out of politeness, we avoid translating, but the gist is this.
Contrary to what one might sometimes believe,those defending their home, family, and land at the front are often well informed. Inside bunkers, they spend their time researching on their smartphones to understand how the free world they defend reacts to their sacrifice. What they get in return. What guarantees they will provide for their children. What will happen after them, in the worst case. How much their sacrifice will be valued. Were talking about people ready to die to defend absolute values that others, just hours away, trample upon.
Informed and aware, these soldiers openly share the feeling of fighting alone against an enemy also funded by those who pretend to support them.
With mud on his face and in his hair, and a blood-soaked bandage under a tattered uniform, a young man recently returned from Pokrovsk told us:Were fighting for ourselves. Every piece of land we wrest from the enemy is a conquest, but also a painful contradiction between our exultation and the deep bitterness of knowing that the sacrifices made to obtain it will remain largely unseen. Applauded from afar, but rarely honored in action, as if our blood had no value.
