"Anisometropia" is pronounced as an-iso-me-TRO-pe-a, with the primary stress on the third syllable ("TRO").

Anisometropia is an eye condition where the two eyes have significantly different refractive power, generally by one diopter or moreIt can lead to symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, and poor depth perception, and if left untreated in children, it can cause a more serious condition called amblyopia or "lazy eye". Treatment options range from corrective lenses and contact lenses to surgical procedures.

Symptoms
  • Dizziness
  • Eye strain or discomfort
  • Poor depth perception
  • Light sensitivity
  • Nausea

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Headaches
Causes
  • Unequal refractive error: This can be due to different levels of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism in each eye.

  • Eye shape or size: Differences in the shape or size of the eyes can cause unequal curvature and refractive power.

  • Genetics: The condition can have a genetic component.

  • Other factors: Previous eye surgeries or injuries can also be a cause.

Treatment and management
  • Corrective lenses:
Prescription glasses or contact lenses can correct the difference in refractive power.

  • Surgery:
Surgical procedures may be necessary in some cases to correct the vision in one or both eyes.

  • Importance of early detection:
In children, prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent permanent vision problems like amblyopia. An eye patch on the stronger eye can also be used to encourage the weaker eye to develop properly.
