Reflections on the Golden Intersection: Investing, Parenting, and the Journey to 2026
As the college admissions season ends and my daughter prepares to graduate high school, I find myself reflecting on the many conversations Ive had with mentors and friends. To mark this milestone, Ive compiled a few life scripts Ive written over the past year regarding the intersection of investing, education, and the art of living.
1. The Triple Crown of Career Longevity
To go far, you need the intersection of three dimensions: Passion (Internal Drive), Doing what you love (Emotional Resonance), and Doing what you are good at (Competitive Advantage). My own journeyfrom Biology to Computer Science to Financial Investmentwas fueled by this search.
2. Investing vs. Parenting: The Parallel Paths
Whether managing a portfolio or raising a child, the pitfalls are the same:
Anxiety: In investing, it leads to buy high, sell low. In parenting, it leads to toxic comparisons that crush a childs confidence.
Short-termism: In the market, we sell great winners too early. In parenting, we often ignore a childs true interests to chase prestigious majors.
Every child has a different growth curve. Just as we focus on an investments fundamentals rather than daily price fluctuations, we should focus on a childs self-growth. Success follows mastery; it cannot be forced.
3. The Success Illusion
A friend whose son graduated from MIT shared a great insight: A prestigious degree is a door opener for 5 years. After that, its 100% about your IQ, EQ, and health. We tell our children: Be a life learner, stay humble, and treat life as a journey, not an end result.
4. The Brief Window of Enough
Many dont realize the intersection of Health, Time, and Money is incredibly brief.
Young: Health Time, but no Money.
Working: Health Money, but no Time.
Retired: Money Time, but often failing Health.
The greatest meaning of life is making yourself happy. As Chua Lam said: Eat better, sleep better, have more fun.
5. Market Wisdom Humility
In investing, there are only three ways to win: Foresight (Cognitive edge), Exploiting Panic (Emotional edge), and Cycles (Patience edge). Everything else is noise.
The market, like life, will slap you in the face the moment you become arrogant. I wake up at 4:30 AM to run and study not because Ive figured it all out, but because I respect the uncertainty of the journey.
Final Thought for 2026:
If you are healthy and safe, life is already a comedy.
Dont be a scuba diver buried in your problems; be an oceanographer viewing them from above.
To my daughter and to all of you: Health is the requirement; prosperity is the bonus. Enjoy the ride.
