The concept of free is always changing. When there was the Berlin Wall, the West considered the people in the communist regime were not free because the regime did not allow them to migrate freely. One of my colleagues asked me that is Chinese people have difficulty getting a passport to go to America? I answered that it is not the problem of getting a Chinese passport; it is the problem of getting an American visa.
America is a free country. Can everyone who longs for freedom get into America? Chinese are denied of American visa as suspects with migration intentions. Should the Chinese have the freedom to migrate? Who restricts their freedom?
People of China are not free because the West restricts their freedom. If a Chinese person speaks something good about China, the West may say that you are brainwashed. You see, the Chinese are not supposed to think and speak freely, but only think and speak as the West likes to, or they are labeled as not free.
In some Westerners’ minds, the only Chinese who are free are those who try to overthrow the Chinese government.
Since 1840, China has been “free” that Western powers can invade China and demands for their interest in China. After 1949, China became “not free” because Western powers could not invade China and demand their interest in China. China today is even less free, as American Carriers have to cruise in the South China Sea for freedom of navigation.
Chinese people go to Vancouver to purchase a property and are charged 15% more tax. That's not free. That violates the WTO’s principle of equal treatment.
The Chinese were not free when everyone could freely migrate to America, but only the Chinese could not due to the Chinese Exclusion Act ( when China was not a communist country yet). Chinese are less free than any other country in the aspect of migrating to America because America allocates a negligible quota to the huge population of China.
Overall, the people of China have not been free since 1840. People of China are freer when China gets stronger. People of China want freedom. They know there would be no freedom when China is weak. History since 1840 taught the Chinese that China has to be strong to have freedom for the People of China.
With the rise of China, more and more Chinese can now travel all over the world and migrate to other countries. They can do more things of their choice because they have more money and time.
People of China are not free yet. They will be free when China is strong enough and can do whatever it wants in the world, as the Western powers do. Especially when they can define what is free. The Chinese will then say that the American people are not free because they cannot bring down the memorials of the slave owners in the National Mall in Washington DC.
