重讀“雙城記”－A Tale of Two Cities

這是一本狄更斯（Charles Dickens) 全集中篇幅相對較短的曆史小說，以法國大革命前15年一直到Reign of Terror為時代背景，兩代人在倫敦和巴黎的生死故事。

 

年少時第一次讀他的中文版，隻覺艱深晦澀。那個年紀對世界曆史的了解非常局限，而教科書中對法國大革命的高度評價讓讀者很難理解Reign of Terror，那個革命時代人與人, 階級與階級之間的殘酷與仇恨。生與死，對一個teenager來說實在是非常遙遠，而愛與恨，則又是那麽的理所當然。

 

然而狄更斯是我除雨果以外的最愛，來美國工作的第一年就下定決心買了全套的狄更斯。他的小說，包括他的David Copperfield, Great Expectation, Oliver Twist, Bleak House, A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, and Our Mutual Friend, 都是一讀再讀。這麽多年轉輾多地，除了一套Harry Porter以紀念和兒子一起閱讀的成長時光，唯一留下的也就是這套狄更斯。

 

狄更斯的小說總體來說讀來輕鬆幽默，人物刻畫特別是對小人物和反麵角色極其精彩，人物栩栩如生，語言生動傳神。每年我都會讀他的1-2本，用以平衡閱讀其他書籍時的厚重感。但是對於這本晦澀的A Tale of Two Cities, 卻一直望而生畏。

 

當我再一次在書架上搜索今年要讀的狄更斯時，一下子看到A Tale of Two Cities。時代不同，卻身同感受。

 

今天的美國，處在一個出門沒有安全感的時期，一個社會動蕩的時期，一個政治上極左極右的時期。而作為華人的我，看到太多的懷疑，仇恨，暴力和抗爭。希望在哪裏？humanity在哪裏？

 

翻開書的第一頁，就看到了著名的quote, 一下子被深深吸引：

 

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.”

 

狄更斯用他一貫的排比重複，道出了人世間最深沉複雜的情感。愛，可以把一個幾乎與世隔絕18年的囚犯“recall to life”, 恨，則可以讓一個年輕少女成長為一個冷酷的複仇狂：“Tell the Wind and the Fire where to stop”，讀起來讓人心驚膽戰。

 

但是，Sydney Carton, 卻帶來了石破天驚的結局。他告訴我們，愛需要sacrifice, 而隻有sacrifice, 愛才有意義，人生才有意義。

 

“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”

 

狄更斯用上麵另一著名的短句，結束了本書，卻讓Sydney在文學長河中得到永生。
