葉芝的詩：當你老去

       When you are old  是 葉芝(1865～1939)寫給茅德·岡 的情詩。 1889年23歲的葉芝第一次遇見了美麗的女演員茅德·岡，她時年22歲，是一位駐愛爾蘭英軍上校的女兒，她投身到爭取愛爾蘭民族獨立的運動中，並成為領導人之一。這在葉芝的心目中平添一輪特殊的光暈。 
葉芝對於茅德·岡一見鍾情，而且一往情深，求婚卻遭拒絕。盡管如此，葉芝對於她的愛慕終身不渝，寫下了很多詩歌來描繪激情的愛戀，絕望的怨恨，以及愛和恨之間複雜的張力。

當你老去，鬢發灰霜，睡意酣沉

暖爐旁倦臥，輕取此書，緩緩閱讀

追憶那輕柔的凝眸和

深沉的暈波 

 

幾多愛慕你青春的靚影

似真如幻傾心你的美貌

唯他愛你朝聖者的靈魂

愛那歲月雋刻在麵龐裏的憂傷

 

你在爐柵邊彎腰低語，輕淺抑鬱

愛情如何逝去

如何步上群山，在繁星掩映中

遮住了臉

When you are old and grey and full of sleep, 　　 
 And nodding by the fire, take down this book, 　　 
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look 　　 
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; 　 
 
How many loved your moments of glad grace, 　　 
And loved your beauty with love false or true, 　　 
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you, 　　 
And loved the sorrows of your changing face; 　 



And bending down beside the glowing bars,
