2020 小奧斯卡電影獎-獨立製片精神獎巡禮（2月8日）

The Film Independent Spirit Awards 創建於1984年，發起人是 Jeanne Lucas 和 IFP/West President Anne Kimmel Gregory，是專為獨立製片的電影工作者設置的獎，起初稱 Friends of Independent Awards, 1986 年改名為 Film Independent Spirit Awards為Independent Feature Project/ West board 主辦，後來此組織變為Film Independent。 現在每年在Oscars 頒獎前一天，在洛杉磯西側的 Santa Monica 海灘搭帳篷舉行。頒獎會請很多著名電影人參加。1990年代有Keynote Speech，在過去 發言人中有 Francis Coppola , Oliver Stone, Jodie Foster, Martin Scorsese，Spike Lee, John Walter.
隻有Film Independent的成員可參加投票，各項提名由Film Independent 組織的提名委員會提供。成員是電影評論家，導演，編劇，演員，攝影師，剪輯師等電影工作者。 Film Independent指導委員會成員，及工作人員不可參加提名委員會。Film Independent Membership 分兩種: Film Lover Membership， 任何喜愛電影的人都可參加，每年會費$95, 可以免費看提名片，投票選獲獎片。Filmmaker Pro Membership 每年$250為想拍片的人設置，會員可享受谘詢，選演員，免費租借場地開會，讀劇本，audition 等。
現有會員 7300個，2/3 的會員是電影工作者。
1996 年指導委員會大致規定了提名片的標準：獨特的視角， 原創的，挑戰性的的題材和主題，努力以低成本製作的優秀電影。2007年為了吸引更多影片參加評獎，把製作費門檻提高到$20 million, 2016年提高到 $22.5 Million。獎項有最佳故事影片，最佳首部影片（$500,000獎金）最佳製片，最佳導演，最佳劇本，最佳首部劇本，最佳男配角，最佳女配角，John Cassavetes 獎（成本$500,000 以下的影片），最佳男演員，最佳女演員, 最佳攝影，最佳剪輯，最佳國際電影，最佳紀錄片，Robert Altman 獎等其他獎項。
由於獨立製片成本可低可高，不追求高利潤，不受通俗市場的左右，所以題材，主題更寬，內容更豐富，手法更有探索性。演員可找新秀，或非職業演員。所以Film Independent Spirit Awards 的提名片能吸引喜歡題材多樣，具有探索性的電影的觀眾。

我想介紹一下就我看過的2020 Spirit Awards 提名影片，供大家參考。(有些沒看過的，我載一些評論)
Best Feature
A Hidden Life 導演 Terrence Malick (b 1943, 76 歲)
片長3 小時，影片非常細致描述二戰時一個奧地利虔誠的天主教農民漸漸意識到納粹的殘忍和戰爭的非正義，頂著村民，村長，神父，主教的壓力，在妻子的支持下，拒絕宣誓效忠納粹，拒絕再次參軍作戰，被捕入獄，判刑，最後被處死。故事人物十分真實可敬，立意深刻，節奏緩慢，導演思維，mise en scene, 切割時間，空間的方式特別，重疊，跳躍，攝影機跟拍用仰廣角，人物特寫也常常用仰角，好像符合人物內心的複雜思索，抗爭。有很多描寫瑣碎生活的場麵，把真實和質樸的山區生活呈現給觀眾，讓觀眾感受。美麗簡樸的的山區生活和殘酷的納粹監獄形成強烈對比，攝影，聲音，音樂非常出色。需要一定的耐心觀看。

Terrence Malick’s films are like dance pieces. His characters don’t stand still — they glide, they twirl, they run. His camera never rests, either. And the center of his films isn’t story, or dialogue, or character. It’s a spiritual theme — a question — examined through motion and music.
“A Hidden Life,” his latest, is based on the true story of an Austrian farmer who refuses to pledge loyalty to Hitler, and the director tells it in the same elliptical, poetic style he’s been exploring since 1978’s “Days of Heaven.” It has an elegiac score by James Newton Howard, featuring violin solos by James Ehnes and a main theme that conjures the heartbreaking beauty of paradise lost. But, as with all of the director’s films, it also features a collage of classical masterworks.
Clemency 編劇導演 Chinonye Chukwu，主演Alfre Woodward， 翻譯為特赦。
講一位女死刑執行官不得不執行一個明顯被錯判的死囚的死刑。影片表現她的孤獨，沉默，執行過12個死刑給她帶來的身心創傷，以及麵對要處死被錯判囚犯的殘酷現實。複雜的的人物性格，出色的表演，對不能主持正義的司法製度和死刑製度的質問，是影片的看點。
The Farewell 編劇導演 Lulu Wang。
這部影片自2019 Sundance Festival 以來受到很多觀眾和評論家的喜愛。影片講述六歲隨父母來美國移民的Bili，回中國看望患四期癌症的祖母。為了避免祖母知道自己的病情，全家人編了一個給Bili 在日本的Cousin回國辦婚禮的幌子，借機向祖母最後告別。事件，告別方式獨特，悲喜混合，有真情悲情，又不得不掩埋，以喜遮哀。在這種情景中表現移民家庭的三代人的真情，關愛。打動人的Scenes 很多，為遮掩病情以及文化衝突的喜劇情景也不少。但主要歸功三代人的真情寫的感人，Lulu Wang對悲喜劇巧妙融合的出色才華。音樂，剪輯，攝影都出色。整個cast表演很優秀，尤其是演Bili 的Awkwafina和演祖母的趙淑珍。Awkwafina得2020金球獎喜劇和音樂劇類最佳女演員獎。 趙淑珍獲2020 Spirit Awards 最佳女配角提名。
Marriage Story 編劇導演 Noah Baumbach
Marriage Story是一部描述當代現實生活中兩個追求演藝藝術的夫婦，由於忽略了對方的追求，情感和培養婚姻所需的愛，走上了離異的道路。在律師的參與下，兩人情感逐漸惡化，走到兩人悔恨自己, 無法挽回，隻能即將錯就錯，痛苦分手。劇本結構，循序漸進，環環相扣，自然推向高潮。人物真實可信，觀眾高度認同。兩人和孩子，尤其是爸爸和孩子的關係，寫得十分動人。Nicole 和 Charlie 在 LA Charlie 公寓裏的互相責備，吵架，傷痛對方，後悔，道歉，擁抱在一起的戲 特別感人，是影片的核心情感衝突高潮，將會成為電影經典。除兩個主角 Scarlett Johansson 和 Adam Driver 的出色表演外，演律師的三個演員也很優秀。其中女律師的扮演者Laura Dern 獲金球獎和英國電影電視獎最佳女配角獎。導演，編劇，男女主角也獲金球獎，英國電影電視獎，美國Oscars獎提名。
Uncut Gems 編劇導演Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie ，主演 Adam Sandler
影片寫一個對籃球賭博精通著迷的小珠寶商，像所有精通自己專業的英雄，具有冒險意誌和精神。他負債累累，給債主尾隨追債，但他總能想辦法躲過。他設計一個非常冒險的計劃，從非洲買來一顆未加工的寶石，買給一個籃球明星，用這筆錢來下個大賭注，實現他的人生目的。就在他賭注成功，興高采烈時被追債的槍手打死。 整個影片以記錄片的方式跟隨他在紐約的珠寶區活動，在家和家人相處，在珠寶店和夥計以及籃球明星打交道。觀眾同情他的處境，佩服他的精明，冒險，為他的死悲哀。看點在小人物在困鏡中的掙紮，精明，奮鬥和成功。編劇導演敘述有條有理，紀錄片跟拍的方式很突出，珠寶區暗色調的攝影，珠寶區以及紐約街道，住宅的寫實攝影為故事提供了真實壓抑的環境，這些都是看點。Adam Sandler 全身心地投入角色的自然表演是整個影片的的亮點，堪稱一絕，沒得Oscasr 提名實屬遺憾
Best First Feature
Book Smart 導演 Olivia Wilde。這是2006年出道的演員Olivia Wilde導演的第一部故事片。由Kaitlyn Dever和Beanie Felstein 和一群優秀的年輕演員出演。
故事講述一對平時苦學一直保持A的即將畢業的女高中生，突然發現平時她們認為玩鬧不用功的同學居然和她們一樣考上了常青藤大學。 兩人悔恨錯過美好時光，決定畢業典禮前放開玩鬧一夜。 影片由此出發帶領觀眾隨她們找同學聚會，在找的過程中，展示她們不知道的同學的另一麵，比如富人孩子的孤獨，暗戀，一個女同學的同性戀，一個女孩喜歡毒品，她們的校長是LYFT司機。一係列快節奏的巧秒喜劇吃驚，發現，突轉，展示一群高中生的秘密是電影的看點，兩個女高中生的友誼衝突是粘合力和主線，喜劇性格，情景，衝突設計出色，節奏明快，cast 優秀。作為第一次做導演的作品，獨特，新穎，非常成功。影片普受好評，演員Beanie Felstein 獲多項電影獎提名。

The Last Man in San Francisco 導演製片Joe Talbot （ DVD and Streaming ）
是一部詩意電影, 傷感，懷舊，失落是影片的情緒主題。Jimmie和 Montry 倆個好友想恢複一座 著名Filmore 地區的Victorian house。這房子根據主人公Jimmie說是他祖父1946年造的，他小時曾在房子裏住過，玩耍過，現在被白人房主拋棄，他要恢複房子當年的溫磬。兩人經過努力偷偷搬了進去。當Montry發現 房子不是Jimmie的祖父造的，兩人友誼結束。 影片結尾在Montry遠遠 注視著Jimmie 在海上金門橋附近劃船而去。
影片沒有強烈的人物衝突，故事發展緩慢，畫麵優美，攝影出色，集中在兩個人物的友誼，以及人物對房子的懷舊和周圍的殘酷現實變化，包括好友被殺。主人公夢幻般的想找回過去的感覺，包括想恢複和好友Montry 的友誼已經不可能了。影片獲2019 Sundance 最佳電影導演獎，特殊評委獎。
The Mustang 導演 Lure de Clermont (法國)
一個脾氣暴躁的囚犯因誤傷妻子致腦殘進了監獄。 他被選參加一個馴馬改造項目，在馴馬負責人的幫助下，他開始珍惜和馬的關係，成功地馴服了一匹像他一樣烈的 Mustang 野馬，同時和女兒的關係也有了改進。在拍賣會上，Mustang 馬受驚於直升機，把他摔翻在地 差點將他踩死。當他得知馬故要被處死，他違反獄規將馬放走。
比利時演員 Matthias Schoenaerts以演猛暴中有細膩情感的角色出名，導演啟用他主演 The Mustang，絕對是最好的選擇。他把人物的內涵和變化演到了極致。他本人就是一匹 Mustang 馬。
片中Nevada 的荒涼，嚴峻的外景，馴馬的艱難驚險，都給這個第一次做導演的女性拍得賦予詩意。Bruce Dern（Laura Dern 的父親） 出演馴馬負責人。

The intersection of grief and faith is a bit complicated, whether in reality or as fiction. No two people grieve the same way, and no two cultures have the same structure for what happens when a loved one dies. First time feature film writer-director Shawn Snyder dives right into the nitty gritty of science, loss and faith, and delivers a charming, quirky, human and, at times, macabre, film in “To Dust.”
Shmuel (Géza Röhrig, “Son of Saul”) has just lost his wife to cancer. A Hasidic cantor, he does everything his faith asks him to do following her death, but still he is obsessed with what might be happening to his wife’s corpse. Is she decomposing? If so, how? And more importantly, is her soul suffering as her body rots into the Earth? Completely oblivious that his two sons are also grieving, he goes in search of answers and meets Albert (Matthew Broderick), a biology professor at the local community college. Albert initially rejects Shmuel and tries to send him away, but then, seeing a man lost in grief, decides to help Shmuel find out what happens to a decomposing corpse through some odd, and outrageous, experiments.
Though the film’s opening sequence is melancholic and somber, the rest of the film keeps grief in focus but offers a mix of charm and dry humor in its two leads. In every sense of the story, this film plays like a buddy comedy. An unlikely duo, Röhrig and Broderick are the yin and yang to the overall tone of the film. Shmuel’s pain and conflict over going against the teachings of his faith are complemented by Albert’s cynical humor and devotion to science.
Broderick can definitely play a quietly insidious character; Albert calls to mind Broderick’s once-idealistic teacher in “Election,” but with less deviousness and more charisma. Röhrig is refreshing to watch as a man going through real emotion; Shmuel doesn’t know what to do with his feelings, but he’s trying to make it to the other side of grief with his faith intact. He walks a fine tightrope in balancing pain and healing, without ever going over the edge to either way. Grief is, after all, a journey — there is no quick fix for it.
Snyder and co-writer Jason Begur’s smart script doesn’t treat death as a joke, and that lends a bit of compassion to some otherwise morbid scenes involving a science experiment with a pig and a view of some corpses. I personally don’t know much about Hasidic Jews, but I do know how complicated it can be to mix faith and science without mocking one or the other, and there is a feeling of care in the script to both sides of spectrum. The film neither preaches nor patronizes one character, or one way of life, instead offering a look at two men simultaneously losing a bit of their guards and accepting different truths about the circle of life.

這是一部心理恐怖片。講述1890s New England一個小島上暴風雨到來前後兩個Light House Keeper的衝突，劇本，導演，攝影，production design和演員表演都很出色。人物的變態，內心活動，幻覺和險惡環境被影片的黑白攝影, 聲音混合和剪輯表現得無以倫比。對話 New England 方言，難懂。演員Robert Pattinson ，Willem Defoe 攝影獲Oscars 最佳攝影提名。

屬於個人，家庭衝突故事。以現在 Shia 在禁酒所裏的治療和對童星時代的父子關係回憶，交叉進行，客觀地勾畫出兩人在製片廠工作的艱辛，衝突，父親酗酒的複雜的性格以及自己反判性格成長，痛苦和甜蜜，傷感混合，十分感人。導演，攝影，演員，劇本都非常出色。整個影片從劇本構思創作，到拍攝就是一個動人的故事，2017年Shia 在禁酒所裏和導演 Alma Harel 的通信中構思創作了劇本，自己出演父親。在多論多電影節上 Shia said” I only made this for two people. Selfish for myself to survive where I was at, and for my father. He is with it, he is proud“. Honey Boy 像 Eugen O’Neill ，Tennessee William，Arthur Miller 的作品。絕對是挖掘家庭不和諧關係的獨特佳作。
Luce Dir, Julius Onah
是一部看似簡單但非常複雜的現代懸疑心理劇，很難確定誰錯誰對。大概都有錯有對，人物沒那麽完美。故事牽涉一位從非洲被領養的，做過兒童士兵的黑人男孩高中生，關愛的白人領養父母和嚴格的黑人老師。其中有故意和老師作對，暴力恐怖嫌疑，過激言論，強奸嫌疑，追求公正，平等待遇等問題。劇情比較複雜。 Wikibpedia 有詳盡介紹。演員Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth, 新秀 Kelvin Harrison Jr.

第一次看到這樣正麵深入細致，滿懷同情心地描寫脫衣女郎的電影，寫她們的工作，家庭，日常生活，友誼，背叛。 影片雖然是講述現幾個脫衣女郎以下藥方法，趁華爾街的客人昏迷之際，刷卡賺取大量金錢的故事，但主要是集中在新手Destiny（Vivian Wu） 和 Ramona（Jenifer Lopaz）的關係上，寫她們的結識，互助，設騙局，賺錢，背叛，理解。 Jeniffer Lopaz 的表演受到媒體很多好評。編劇，導演，攝影，剪輯一流，無可挑剔。

Les Miserable (France) Dir. Ladj Ly
以寫實的方式拍攝三個警察在巴黎幾種族裔雜居的巴黎郊區貧民區艱難維護治安的故事。寫他們與居民，青少年的衝突，三個警察有不同性格，不同態度和方式處理問題，他們自身也有衝突，影片結尾青少年暴動襲擊警察，在關鍵生死存亡的時刻，曾經搶救過非洲移民少年Issa生命的警察製止了憤怒的Issa手中致命的燃燒瓶。劇本幾條線索設計很好，人物真實生動，警察的艱難，貧民區人生活的困苦，以及他們的衝突，寫得出色。具有現實現實主義作品逼人思索的的力度。影片開始各族裔年輕人在凱旋門慶祝2016年法國足球隊得勝和結尾青少年暴動形成強烈的對比。人們不禁要問, 問題出在哪裏，應該怨誰？
Parasite （Korea）Dir. Bong Joon -ho （中譯：奉俊昊)
是一部非常優秀的審視窮富人關係的影片，是一部立意，人物，結構，編劇，演員，導演，攝影，剪輯，美工，聲音，音樂全麵出色的 影片。也隻有同情關懷下層社會，認真審視窮富關係，具有深厚的韓國文化藝術底蘊和對電影藝術的精湛把握的 Bong Joon-jo 才能做出這樣優秀的影片。難怪影片受到世界各地電影觀眾和評論家一致好評。這是一部10年，20年難得的雅俗共賞的，具有深刻內容的優秀影片，是韓國電影，東亞電影，世界電影的經典。

A worried mother (Karen Kaia Livers) caring for her mange-ridden family dog; her unemployed, alcoholic son (Dominique McClellan) and the wife (Emyri Crutchfield) who supports him; and a preacher (Wendell Pierce) whose wife’s recent death has pushed him toward the bottle are a few of the characters who make up the beautifully rich world of Southeastern Louisiana in Phillip Youmans’ extraordinary debut feature, Burning Cane. The poetic lyricism of the film’s handheld camerawork calls to mind a Terrence Malick-like interest in the influence of place on the people who inhabit it, and how deeply the beauty of the natural world can contrast with the brutality of human acts. As one of the principal embodiments of this contradiction, Pierce gives a powerful performance as the preacher who is struggling to both help his flock as well as himself.

Ash Mayfair’s painterly Vietnamese drama “The Third Wife” draws us in to a cloistered world of 18th century rural polygamy and suppressed desire that puts a filmic premium on every instance of touch, be it tolerated, welcome or feared.
In a remote, beautiful stretch of river-run valley, 14-year-old May (Nguyen Phuong Tra My) becomes the youngest of three bonded mistresses to an older landowner (Le Vu Long) who expects a son, the true source of wifely power in the household. Though he has a grown male heir with eldest wife Ha (Tran Nu Yên-Khê), the status of second wife Xuan (Mai Thu Huong Maya) was compromised when she birthed daughters. May, eager to show her reproductive fealty, prays for a boy, but she is also awakening to her true sexuality when she develops a growing attraction to free-spirited Xuan, who is herself engaging in a secret, turbulent affair with her husband’s son.
Mayfair and cinematographer Chananun Chotrungroj turn their setting’s soft-lighted interiors, narrow-focus close-ups and tranquil exteriors into a truly gorgeous, detailed picture book of intimacy and erotic unease in a rigid patriarchy, even if the frequent cutaways to running water and lepidoptera are a little too on the nose as metaphoric commentary, and the overall rhythm edges toward monotonously sleepy. But there is much that is finely wrought here as a tactile slice of women’s history told in careful observances, hidden textures and the sights and sounds of nature unbound.
