第一代移民都差不多。。。

 

節儉，愛種菜園子。。。

 

昨天晚上值班，兩個同事都是意大利人。當年這裏工業化的時代有很多意大利人和他們的後代，說小時候上學，一看學生冊子的名字，大半都是意大利人。對外人都是意大利人，到他們自己裏麵也分地域。不同的地方習俗飲食也不一樣。當然現在都紛紛搬到郊區去了，城裏成了貴人的天地。

 

他們GRANDPARENT這一輩，都是講意大利語的，愛弄吃的，在院子裏開菜園子種各種瓜菜，決不亞於現在的老中們。他們愛親戚朋友湊一起聚會，所以家裏有兩個廚房，男的一個女的一個，到聚會的時候忙得團團轉。

 

其中一個，回憶當年他爺爺還在自己家釀酒，不過隻有他一個人喜歡。。還自己壓意大利麵的麵片，做CANNOLI灌奶油，做自己秘方的汁。。。

 

他爺爺每次做CANNOLI的殼，鋸一段掃帚的木杆兒，裹上麵放在油裏炸。因為木頭輕，浮在油麵上，還得拿個叉子按著。

 

於是他覺得很可笑，就說爺爺，你為什麽不用個沉點的東西。

 

爺爺說，THIS IS ALWAYS THE WAY TO DO。。。。

 

經過大蕭條的人，怕錢存銀行不見了，在家裏東一點西一點地藏錢。後來他們收拾老人的東西的時候，拿起本書一翻，裏麵掉出個五塊錢或者十塊錢的票子。。

那怎可能呢？別說不同的國家來的新移民，從東北到廣東福建一帶來的，還有讀書，和打工背景的，都會完全不同的

Chinese really like to generalize and put people into different categories.
There are many, millions, first generation immigrants and they can't be all the same. Some are born with money and come with money, some are poor and stay poor,
certainly not everyone likes gardening or cooking ethnic foods.
Locally born people may like gardening too! It's pointless to try to put people into the same groups because they have the same hobbies.
What about this: there are elderly people who like gardening because they are retired and have time. Some elderly people grew up poor like saving cash and putting under it the mattress.
Age is obviously more of a factor than originality here. If you control the age factor, then the results of your survey would be very different.
