With a 47-point gain today, the Dow reached its highest level since Sept. 30, 2008.

The rally also benefited from the Federal Reserve ‘s decision to continue its low-interest-rate policy, plus a decline in the dollar that pushed commodity prices and stocks higher.

Futures trading suggests that the market could open higher on Thursday.
After hours, Nike shares were up 3.6% to $73.44 after it said fiscal-third-quarter earnings beat estimates. FedEx was up 1.3% in regular trading to $89.90 and $90.99 after hours ahead of its fiscal-third-quarter earnings before Thursday's open.
