Market Watch 09/29/2009

Stocks lost ground today following a Conference Board report that its consumer confidence index fell in September after gaining the month before. Analysts had expected an increase.

Many analysts warn the economy can't sustain a rebound if consumers don't boost spending.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 9,742.20, down 47.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed at 1,061.61, down 2.37. The Nasdaq composite index closed at 2,124.04, down 6.70.

Falling stocks outpaced gainers on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume came to 1.2 billion shares compared with 979 million Monday, when trading was light because of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur.
