She began her great international career as the Leipzig pianist and composer Clara Wieck. When she was 21, she married Robert Schumann who was 9 years older than her, against her father’s will. Clara and Robert had 7 kids together and Clara continued to travel the world to give concerts.
Clara and Robert Schumann
Robert first heard Clara’s piano performance when she was 9 years old. Then he also began to take the piano lessons from Clara’s father Friedrich Wieck. Clara and Robert fell in love with each other, but Clara’s father was against their relationship. In 1837 Rober wrote a letter to Clara, that he wanted to marry her. He wrote that he could not think of anything else before she gave him a yes. Since she was 18 years old at that time, without her father’s approval, she could not marry him, she wrote a letter to the court. In the letter, she explained to the court, that she and Robert had wanted to get married for a long time. Clara wrote, that it was very difficult for her that she had to marry without her father’s blessing; but she was sure that she did right thing. On September 12, 1840 (one day before her 21st birthday), Clara married Robert in Leipzig.
