FOOD AND DRUG INTERACTIONS
A Dietary Precautions Guide for Medications
Interactions exist between some foods and the medications you may take. This pamphlet(from my hospital) is provided as an educational resource.  Not all medications or possible interactions have been listed. If you still have questions concerning interactions please contact your pharmacist or physician. Please Circle all medications your are actively taking.

Actonel Fosamax Boniva	Risedronate Alendronate Ibandronate	-Take this medication first thing in the morning with a full 6-8 OZ glass of plain water at least 30 minutes before anything else(food,drink,or other medications) -Stay sitting or standing upright for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication and until you eat or drink. Do Not lie down.
Cordarone	Amiodarone	-Always take with food or without food, do not go back and forth -Do not drink large amounts of grapefruit juice while on this medication.
Lanoxin	Digoxin	-Do not take at the same time with fiber-rich foods, fiber supplements, or pectin- containing foods (apple, pears)
Lipitor Crestor Zocor Pravachol Lescol Mevacor Tegretol Buspar Halcion Prograf Coreg Norvasc Plendil Cardene Procardia Sular Calan Cardizem,Cartia, Tiazac,Taztia	Atorvastatin Rosuvastatin Simvastatin Pravastatin Fluvastatin Lovaststin Carbamazapine Buspirone Triazolam Tacrolimus Carvedilol Amlodipine Felodipine Nicardipine Nifedipine Nisoldipine Verapamil Diltiazem	-Do not drink grapefruit juice while on these medications
Cipro levaquin	Ciprofloxacin Levofloxacin	-Do not take these medications at the same time with any products containing calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc such as dairy products, antacids, multivitamins, calcium-fortified juices,etc. -Cipro- Take drug 2 hours before or 2 hours after these products -Levaquin- Take drug 2 hours before or 2 hours after these products
Grifulvin V, Gris-Peg	Griseofulvin	-Always take this medication with a fatty meal.
Flagyl Amaryl Glucotrol Diabiness Orinase	Metronidazole Glimepiride Glipizide Chlorpropamide Tolbutamide	-Avoid any alcohol containing products(beverages,cough/cold medications,mouth wash,etc.)while taking these medications and for 3 days after finishing medication
Trexall, Rheumatrex	Methotrexate	-Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating -Avoid alcohol while taking this medication
Xeloda	Capecitabine	-Take this medication with water 30 minutes after a meal
Mepron	Atovaquone	-Take this medication with a fatty meal
Zyvox Marplan Nardil Pamate	Linazolid Isocarboxazide Phenelzine Tranylcypromine	-Avoid foods and beverages high in tyramine*See food list below
Nydrazid, Tubizid	Isoniazid, INH	-Avoid foods and beverages high in tyramine*See food list below -Avoid any alcohol containing products(beverages,cough/cold medications,mouth wash,etc.)while taking these medications and for 3 days after finishing medication -Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
Matulane	Procarbazine	-Avoid foods and beverages high in tyramine*See food list below -Avoid any alcohol containing products(beverages,cough/cold medications,mouth wash,etc.)while taking these medications and for 3 days after finishing medication
Sumycin	Tetracycline	-Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating -Take 4 hours before or 4 hours after any products containing calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc such as dairy produts, antacids, multivitamins, calcium-fortified juices,etc.
Glucophage, Fortamet,Riomet	Metformin	-Do not take at the same time with fiber-rich foods, fiber supplements
Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune	Cyclosporine	-Always take with food or without food, do not go back and forth -Do not drink grapefruit juice while on these medications
Videx	Didanosine/ddi	-Take on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating
Crixivan	Indinavir	-Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating, or with a low fat, light meal
Norvir Viracept	Ritonavir Nelfinavir	-Take with food
Invirase	Saquinavir	-Take within 2 hours after eating -May take with grapefruit juice if discussed with your doctor, tell your doctor if you have any side effects
Ferro-Sequels, Slow Fe Fergon	Ferrous sulfate FerrousGluconate	-Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating -If you experience stomach upset, take with food
Theo-Dur, Theo-24, Theo-Bid, Slo Bid	Theophylline	-Avoid any caffeine containing products (beverages, tablets, etc.)while taking this medication -Always take with food or without food, do not go back and forth -Do not drink alcoholic beverages while on this medication
Dilantin	Phenytoin	-Always take with food or without food, do not go back and forth -Take 2 hours before or 2 hours after antacids -Do not drink alcoholic beverages while on this medication
Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid	Levothyroxine	-Take on an empty stomach before breakfast -Do not take at the same time with fiber-rich foods, fiber supplements
Lithobid Eskahth	LithiumCarbonate	-Keep meals consistent and regular & drink plenty of fluids -Limit sodium and caffeine intake
Coumadin Jantoven	Warfarin	-Keep meals consistent and regular , especially with Vitamin K containing foods -Refer to the patient education booklet "Understanding your Coumadin Therapy" for additional information or speak with your healthcare provider

Foods high in tyramine*: beer, wine, yeast, bean curd, legumes(beans, peas, lentils), soy beans, soy sauce, tofu, aged cheeses, yogurt, sour cream, smoked/fermented/pickled fish, liver, aged meats(sausage, pepperoni, salami), bouillon cubes, herring, caviar, tuna, salmon, anchovies, dried fish, dried beef, sauerkraut, misosoup, chocolate, coffee, raisins, bananas, figs, red plums, raspberries, mushrooms, eggplants, peanuts, peanut butter.
