Farewell to Sister Clearsky
/ By Tian Duan
You said we would keep on writing poems
and grow old together,
But you went ahead and closed your eyes
along with the final page of your life—
The clear sky became your azure veil,
Softly shrouding the windowsill so dearly cherished.
Waving at clouds this time,
I can’t bear to bid adieu to those wind-curled whites,
like tearful shreds of chrysanthemums,
That cluster around your artistic self—
And that’s now an epitaph carved onto your tombstone here on earth,
And onto your sun-gilded book title.
In a sealed clam of your writings, it remains dustless as ever.
Your soul, no time for “goodbye", slipped away peacefully.
Oh, poetry and distance—yet only the latter has followed you on the journey.
Last night, I opened your verses—
"The Smile When I Turn" and "Kapok Flower Street",
And there you wrote, “If I could look back, / I would / Pick a kapok flower / And gently / Say farewell to you.”
Who would have thought that you, a soaring phoenix,
would fade away with no traces behind?
I wait, wait for your starry eyes, like shooting stars,
in vigil over my desk.
You wait, wait for our endearing friendship, once again at your "Flower Tail Dock" amid a wavering dusk.
Note: "Shooting Star Shower" was the last poem Clearskies published, and "Flower Tail Dock" was the last novel she left behind.
