Welcome to another episode of losing face! J I changed the name of the broadcast because someone has some issues with the age reference in 大媽。

Before we dive into the second sentence, I would like to review
學英語3151’s translation of the first sentence.

Any communications between husband and wife should be a private matter between the couple than anyone else.

Here she used communications. This would have been fine under other context. I happen to have seen the Chinese context when I was choosing this paragraph. This paragraph is right below a conversation Bill and Hilary had about the scandal. So the
對話 here specifically refers to that conversation.

When I saw 3151’s  than” in the sentence, I thought it sounds good, but something else is needed in order to get the meaning across. Just like the “not…but” in the original, here 3151 is trying to get the pattern “none other than…”.  So I would revise 3151’s translation to the following:

This sort of conversation between a husband and wife should be a private matter between none other than the couple themselves. Or should it be itself here?

Or in order to avoid the “self vs. selves” problem, we can use “a private matter of none other than the couple’s own”.

So now, we move on to the second sentence. To make it more fun, and also for my own benefit, I am going to read it in my native dialect. So that you guys can help me diagnose whether my pronunciation problem is caused by my native dialect, or it’s just my way of talking.

Ok I know it sounds really funny. Go ahead,  laugh your heart out. I am going to pause for a second so that you can recover from it.

盡管我長期以來一直努力保護我們僅剩的那點隱私,但我現在什麽也不能做。

1. I have b
een trying to keep the little privacy we have left, but there is nothing I can do now.

2.
Even though I have been constantly trying to protect our privacy, I can not do anything on this unfortunately.

3.
Though I had long tried to protect what was left of our privacy, I could do nothing now.

I missed the
長期以來 in my translation. If I had not miss it, I probably would have used “For a long time, I have been trying…” which is much more clumsy than the original. 3151 has a good shot with “constantly”, though the meaning is a little bit different.

“What was left of” in the original is one of the highlights of what I learned in this practice! All I can say is “
真好啊!” With that, I finish this episode of my broadcast. See you next time!
