Turning point

We experience many turning points in our lives; we witness many turning points in our culture, society, politics, and technology. Today, I’m going to share one of turning points.
In the past, in this discussion groups, I probably said a few times that I trusted the U.S. government and most mainstream media. That’s changed in 2022. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, almost instantly the media began saying, “If Russia can invade Ukraine, China could invade Taiwan.” In April 2022, Lindsey Graham led a bipartisan group visited Taiwan. In August 2022, Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan—making big headlines inside the US and China. I thought that was reckless.
Do they know the history? In 1949, the U.S. recognized Taiwan as the government of China. In 1979, the U.S. switched recognition to Beijing under the “One China” policy, agreeing that Taiwan is a region of China. If Taiwan remains as a region of China, there will not be a war between China and Taiwan.
At first, I thought Lindsey Graham, Nancy Pelosi, and the mainstream media were simply ignorant. Then one day I watched Noam Chomsky on Piers Morgan’s show, where he described in more detail the actual agreement documents. I suddenly realized—wow—these politicians and mainstream media figures know the history; they just choose not to tell us the truth.
What do they gain by not telling us the whole truth? As politicians, they gain more political status, stir up fear, and make Americans support their parties. For journalists, telling the truth could mean losing their jobs.
Was my turning point—from trusting the U.S. government and mainstream media to not trusting them.
Recently, there’s been another claim among politicians and mainstream media: that China is a security threat to the U.S. This has stirred up fear among Americans. But there’s no real basis for that claim. China has only one military base outside of its borders. The U.S. has about 750 military bases outside the country, including around 90 near the South China Sea, with over 87,000 troops. Who is really the security threat to whom? If China is not, then why does our government say it is? They want to stir up fear so Americans will go along with their policies.
