申請了50+pathology, 40+preliminary, 40+neurology

得到 6 個pathology interview
6個neurology interview
5 個 preliminary interview

一月初拿到prematch (pathology) from a community hospital. 在谘詢老刀、和
一些業內人士後，下定決心，不準備繼續play the game， 準備簽合同安心過一個
春節。I may sell myself cheap, but I know that I\\\'m not that expensive and
can not afford unmatched mentally and physically. So there is nothing to
regret for.

在此回顧申請pathology過程中的點點滴滴，經驗，遺憾甚至慘痛教訓．以回報老刀，

jimmy以及大家的鼓勵和建議．隻有在這種open 和positive的環境中，才會有越來
越多
的CMG加入到醫生行列中來．

1：全麵了解申請的科目。非常慚愧我真的對pathology 了解的不多，盡管去做了
observorship， 但每周有限幾次的兩三個小時，我就僅僅知道他們的大致工作流程
和
工作環境，也不知道怎麽比較program, 哪裏的fellowship 是好的，誰是牛人。 總
之，太naive, 我覺得去interview 的過程也是我了解pathology的過程。大家千萬
不要像我這樣。一定要知道你怎麽樣去比較program. (specimen, board pass rate,
fellowship, work load, preview time, scutwork, PA number)

2 麵試時一般問題居多. 但是注意有些問題的問法不同． 例如　”Can you tell
me
how you get to this point in your life?”我開始還想著要把自己對pathology熱
愛講清楚，但是我的回答被faculty打斷幾次之後，就純屬報流水賬了．

3麵試中的tough question (pathology)

1)問得最多的問題當然是 “why switch from pathology to research, and why
now
” 我想在這個論壇以充分詳細討論過許多次，有非常好的答案．我也是受益者之一．

大家一定要準備得非常充分．

２) a faculty(F) at St. Luke’s非常溫和，冷不丁問了我一句 “ If you can
not be a pathologist one day, or there is no pathologist position in the
whole world, what will you do? ”我回答說：　I would teach pathology since
I enjoyed teaching and sharing my knowledge in pathology with….. 從她的
反應看回答還OK

３)當我說到”pathologist is physician’s physician” , a faculty at Uni
of
Louisville問 “Do you think so? And why you think so” 他問問題的語氣仿佛
是這一說法是不科學的．我當然給他好好談了自己的深刻體會．但後悔忘了問他是
否肯定這一說法，看他如何解釋的．這樣以後可以借用。並且本來就是談話嘛，不
是審問．

４) 還是這個faculty，給我講述了一個故事（一個病理醫生在醫生短缺的情況下
Katrina hurricane後給病人治病，有direct patient care, 但媒體認為不妥，因
為病
理醫生沒有這方麵的單獨培訓）後問我　”If you were that pathologist, what
will you tell the media?” 我想怎麽考behavior science, 依稀記得關於內科醫
生在路邊給產婦接生的題目。於是開始倒漿糊。”Well, it is a difficult situation
．．．”　後來他告訴我 他的觀點“pathologist is MD, we have had that training
before and we are able to do this”. 然後上升到“image of pathologist in
the society”。他又大談特談這個社會對pathologist的偏見。我也就附和幾句，
沒有太多自己的見解。

5) 在一個community hospital, PD問我“If there is no position for community

pathologist and only academic position open to you, will you go back to

academic again? 我 simply 否定他的問題前提，陳述自己truly only commit to
community. 其實這個問題延伸到long term goal. 也一直是bother我的問題。因為
我同時申請了Community 和university program. 一般community 問我, 我就 commit
to community service. 如果university 問我， 我就 是 academic pathologist.
（我的PS上說的籠統）見人說人話，見鬼說鬼話。 不知道大家都怎麽回答這種問題
的。

6) UMDNJ 的 一個faculty 考我看slides， 坐在他對對麵的顯微鏡,我的心裏慘叫：
完了
我根本不知道鏡下是什麽組織。那個faculty 說 “這個對你難了點, 是bone tissue”。
我就順著說, 是啊,是啊 , a lot to learn, I will work hard to learn pathology
in residency training. 但是這個特別影響我. 後麵的performance不是很好。 教
訓：no matter what happens during the interview, forget that.

7) University of Chicago 的vice chairman 評論我的 “long term goal as a

neuropathologist” 說 “you have been doing neuroscience research and you

want to do neuropathology, it is too superficial”. 我覺得我沒有把為什麽
我要做pathology 講清楚，給他這樣一個negative impression。還有，Dr. Kumar
的確是牛人，人非常和藹. 他開始毫不吝舍的稱讚你,見麵後的第二句話就把我的研
究說的透徹清楚。我隻有在從另外一個角度談。後他根據你得CV問得非常詳細。還
不知道下
回什麽時候才能見到這位大師級人物。

4. 麵試中的小點滴：

1) You have doing observation for quite a while, but you still have a full

time research work, how do you manage that?

) A well dressed female faculty has a really horribly messy office. When

she open the door, she says: I am very sorry for the mess. When I saw the

office like a garbage place, littering with paper and other things. I really
have not seen any place like this and was totally shocked. 我傻傻得站在
那兒，不知說什麽． It is better to react not like that. I feel one need
to be very humorous to deal with this mess.

3) Bring an umbrella if it is going to rain. Be prepared, always. The PD

even ask me if I have umbrella in a raining day and complement me “you
are
well prepared”

５．還有，不要在電話裏直接take prematch.　那讓我stress了三天．其實完全可
以避
免。謝刀客及時指點迷津，以及大家的建議．

6. 最好不要把麵試排的太密．不要把不同專業的麵試排的太近．我當時把New York
和
NJ的四個麵試連在一起，第三天人覺得特別累，肯定影響performance。不同專業的
麵試太近的話，我個人覺得容易說錯話．

7. Attitude 非常重要．　Show your positive, optimistic side, always.

一路走來，感觸頗多．對LG, 父母的support和 sacrifice，心懷無限感激. 終於可
以把一歲半的兒子從國內接回來了．

希望越來越多的CMG 都能實現在美國當醫生的夢想。
