Elective C-section: safer for baby (no danger of fetal stress, leading to decreased chance of autism). The current surgery technique can pretty much avoid all problems with breathing problem for the baby. If you have a great OB, it is very safe for mother as well. No long-term problem of urinary and fecal incontinence that often associates with vaginal delivery. But your breast milk will come in a day late. You do not feel much pain. It is a surgery, and it feels scary mentally. But unlike emergency c-section, the recovery is pretty fast and smooth.
Vaginal birth: women feel more accomplished after this. Epidural relieves the pain somewhat. However, episiotomy may not be avoidable, which may lead to urinary incontinence many years after birth. Baby may be stressed during birth (oxygen deprivation), and this may lead to other developmental problems later on. You may need to undergo emergency c-section if there is a problem. Long difficult birth followed by emergency c-section increases the risk of infection and risk of baby being hurt, and prolongs recovery time.
There some several high quality scientific studies done recently concerning these. You should ask what is important to you and the baby and choose the one based on your own situation. It is compareing apple to orange, not a simple good or bad issue.
