非生命物體的性別

跟中文一樣，英語裏也有許多的雙關語或本意別用，當詞匯被借來描述不相關的事情時， 很能顯出語言的巧妙。當然這種情況下語言的文化背景很重要。就象下麵中文翻譯，許多不僅失去了隱喻而且一點都不可笑了。

You may not know that many non-living things have a gender.

你大概沒想到許多東西是有性別的吧。

For example:

1. Ziploc bags – They are male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.
   
   封口塑料袋 – 是男性，因為什麽都裝的進，可你什麽都能一樣看得透
   
   注：封口的塑料袋的確有這個特質。 Can you see right through( 一眼看透 ) men? 好像中國男人挺深沉的。

2. Copiers – They are female, because once turned off, it takes a while to warm them up again. It’s an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed.
   
   複印機－女人，　因為如果被關掉了，要預熱好一陣子才能在熱起來。它是個有效的再生產機器，如果按對按鈕的話。　如果按錯了按鈕，那就大難臨頭了。
   
   注 : turn off- 用在機器上是關掉。用在人身上，是說讓人感情上對人或事不感興趣了，或者感官上沒有性趣了（這個非常常用）。
   Push-button: 用在機器上意思是明擺的，機器多是按鈕操作的。用在人身上是一個意思，按一個人的敏感點。

3. Tires – Male, because it goes bald and it’s often over-inflated.
   
   輪胎－男人，因為輪胎會變禿，而且經常是過分膨脹。
   
   注： inflate ：充氣。人這樣時是指自大。
   　
4. Hot air Balloon – Male, because, to get it to go anywhere, you have to tight a fire under it and, of course, there’s the hot air component.
   
   熱氣球－男人，因為，不論你要他去哪兒，你總得在底下加上一把火。　而且，當然，熱氣總是在那兒。
   
   

   注： hot air －熱氣。　也可是說人的情緒或者是這人的情緒給周圍帶來的一種氣氛。這總讓我想起有些男的幹活時的情景。罵罵咧咧的

5. Sponges – Female, because they’re soft, squeezable and retain water.
   
   海綿－女人，因為軟和，適揉捏，且充水。
   
   注： retain water －保留水份。笑話是說比如一個女的開始有小肚子了，她會說，哦，那隻是蓄了些水。
   　
6. Web page – female, because it’s always getting hitting on.
   
   網頁－女人，因為總被點擊
   
   注： hitting on －當 hitting on 一個人時，那是向人示好，多跟性吸引有關
   
7. Subway – Male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up.
   
   地鐵－男人，因為它總是用同樣的路線接乘客。
   
   注： same old lines －也可以是老調重彈，總用同樣的句子
   pick up －用在人身上時，是說男的在社交場合能吸引上個女的。當然反之亦然。
   
8. Hourglass – Female, because over time, the weight can shift to the bottom.
   
   滴漏－女人，因為隨著時間推移，它的重量向底部轉移。
   
   注： bottom － also rear end, also ass. 臀部
   
   
9. Hammer – Male, because it hasn’t changed much over the last 5000 years, but it’s handy to have around.
   
   榔頭－男人，因為它在過去５０００年裏沒改變多少，不過身邊有一個時很方便。
   
   10. Remote Control – Female. Ha! You thought it’d be Male. But consider this – it gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.
   
   遙控器－女人。哈，　那大概想著是男人吧。可是這麽想想－它給男人愉悅，若沒有它男人會失落，而且盡管他不是總知道該按哪個按鈕，可他總是在不停的按！
   
   注：跟前麵的一樣，　這裏的關鍵詞是 the right buttons to push
   
   ：）） ：）） ：））
