是啊,對此我們得避免加入主流。
飛飛~ 回複 悄悄話 不過我還是比較相信這個統計數據的,美國超重的人多確實是個事實。

It's not hard to tell by what we see, isn't it?

When I was in Italy, I was so impressed that they are in such good shape. Occasionally, I could see a few over weighted ones, but when I got close, I could hear they spoke in American English.

When I was in Hong Kong, people mentioned to me "... as tall and big like you ... ...", but I'm only 162cm ware size 2 clothes.
NYTalker 回複 悄悄話 Fully agree! Actually I think these WHO data does have value. Even if the data does not take the races into account, if we assume that WTO takes the same STDs for the definitions of "overweight" and "obese" for all the countries, we can see that American population has big portions in these two categories. This means that on American streets you can see a lot of people whose body weights look abnormal from the people nearby. It would be more indicative if the data also contains the average body weight of each country population.

I know what you mean NYTalker. Since these data are published officially by the World Health Organization, I hope they have big enough sample base and diversity. Also, I think the standard should be different for different races, due to the bone structure and weight can make difference.
NYTalker 回複 悄悄話 It may depend on how you define "overweight". If you get a sampling population and do the statistics for the mean and variance and then define the "overweight" and"obese" as certain STDs away above the mean, you always get some percentage of population as "overweight" and "obese" even if you are facing a population whose members are relatively skinny. The conclusion will very much depend on how many STDs are used for the definition of "overweight" and "obese".

I guess it also serves us as an alert: don't live the way average Americans do.
melly 回複 悄悄話 Not surprise at all. But it makes us feel much better for we are so skinny. LOL
