第一次聽到Core Curriculum是在芝加哥大學招生辦在女兒學校介紹他們的情況時，主講人特別強調他們是Liberal Arts College （文理學院， LAC）,有core curriculum。後來看了一些這方麵的文章，對core curriculum褒貶的都有，而這個係統其實也一直在調整。它其實是許多美國私立大學LAC教育的一個基礎。
Core curriculum起源於哥倫比亞大學的本科。所有學生都必須通過規定的課程，才能進入到自己專業相關的課程。早期這個係統集中在西方文明的起源和曆史。但今天的這個體係包括了下列幾項。
1。Literature Humanities，二學期
A seminar surveying the great works of Western literature
2。Contemporary Civilization， 二學期
A seminar surveying the great works of Western philosophy and social theory
3。Art Humanities， 一學期
A seminar surveying the great works of Western art
4。Music Humanities， 一學期
A seminar surveying the great works of Western music. An exemption exam is offered for qualified students
5。University Writing。 一學期
A seminar designed to inculcate university-level writing skills
6。Foreign Language， 四學期
A distribution requirement intended to instill at least an intermediate level of a foreign language
7。Frontiers of Science， 一學期
A lecture and seminar course designed to instill "scientific habits of mind"
8。Other Science， 二學期
A distribution requirement over any scientific disciplines
9。Major Non-Western Cultures， 二學期
A distribution requirement meant to lessen the perceived Eurocentric biases of the other Core classes
10。Physical Education， 二學期。
從這個core curriculum不難看出本科教育中對文科的偏重。哈佛大學老的core curriculum是由十一個部分組成： Foreign Cultures，Historical Study A，Historical Study B，Literature and Arts A，Literature and Arts B，Literature and Arts C，Moral Reasoning，Quantitative Reasoning，Science A，Science B，Social Analysis。學生必須學完其中的七項。剛剛開始的新的體係包括八個主題： Aesthetic and Interpretive Understanding，Culture and Belief，Empirical and Mathematical Reasoning，Ethical Reasoning，Science of Living Systems，Science of the Physical Universe，Societies of the World，United States in the World。
這個體係的好處在於它不僅開拓了學生的視野，也給學生在大學的前兩年有探索自己興趣的機會，進而選擇自己喜歡的專業。由於隻有兩年時間花在專業課上麵，這些私立大學的本科專業實際上並不太重要。許多學生畢業後的去向往往和他/她們的專業毫不相幹。象在華爾街工作的人，有些就可能是英文專業畢業的。也正是因為大學有兩年的探索時間，美國許多高中生在大學申請是，是不選專業的（Major undecided.)。但對許多理工科畢業的中國父母來講，有些浪費時間，孩子大學四年在自己的專業課上花的時間不夠。中國父母的這種觀點也是實際情況--許多私立大學，尤其是文理學院的畢業班都會選擇讀研究生，以便在專業上能進一步深造。
這個體係在一些公立大學也能見到。但往往麵沒有這些私立大學寬，或要求的課程沒有這些私立大學多。公立大學由於經費人手問題，更多的精力是花在學生的技能培養上。學生畢業，就能幹一行具體的工作。所以，如果用一句簡單的話來對比美國的公立私立大學，那就是“私立重素質，公立重技能”。
