香港在十九世紀是一個名不見經傳的偏僻小漁村。香港本身是一個非常小的島，麵積隻有78.4平方公裏，人口稀少。鴉片戰爭中國戰敗，在1842年簽訂【南京條約】將香港割讓給英國。於是英國在中國的國土邊緣有了一塊立足之地，英國將香港建設為對華貿易的轉口港。從這個時候開始，香港作為轉口港的角色一百多年以來從未改變。
