I just choked and wrote a lot. But guess the damn internet "chokes" too. Coz what I wrote was too sad. So, let's not trying to do it anymore. Life needs to move forward and keep going on.
Conclusion: A randomized, controlled 5-year trial suggests that vitamin C supplementation significantly reduces the frequency of the common cold but had no apparent effect on the duration or severity of the common cold. However, considering several limitations due to protocol amendment, the findings should be interpreted with caution.
Luhua, you did right thing to stay home. If you go to work today, not only you will have hard time to concentrate, you will make mistakes and make you miserable. In addition, you will spread pathogens to everybody and make the others sick as well. So it is no good at all to do a reluctant job. There, you should feel less guilt to call in sick. Hope you recover soon.
Luhua, call in for sick leave for tonight shift and have a break. I understand most of residents never call in for sick leave, because they worried that the other doctor will have to see more pts and cover for her/him. But if you are sick, you can't function normally and recover slowly. You will have chance to pay back later when other is sick. BTW, monday night ER usually is much lighter than weekend shifts, attending should be able to handle it even without residents. Take care.

I used to be sick very often, IV every 3 months because of the upper resperitory tract infection. After I came here, I seldom feel sick, at most take some cold medicine. I think because the air is much more clean than in China. So do not worry , have a good rest and you will be fine soon.
1) personal experience and literature review
2) SUMMARY:
- The effect of ASCORBIC ACID supplementation on
severity and duration of cold symptoms has been
repeatedly, though not consistently, shown to be measurable and statistically significant
3) ADULT:
a) Most controlled trials have found no significant effect of ASCORBIC ACID on the incidence of colds, except for individuals under heavy acute physical stress. However, the effect of ASCORBIC ACID supplementation on severity and duration of cold symptoms has been repeatedly, though not consistently, shown to be measurable and statistically significant, with a median decrease of 22% compared to placebo (Hemila, 1997a). Some authorities have called these effects minor at best (AMA, 1986). Significant reductions in incidence of pneumonia with ASCORBIC ACID supplementation has been reported in 3 studies, including a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Hemila, 1997b).
