a big part of a liberal gun policy is that it very often deters the thugs WITHOUT the actual firing of the gun.
for an amateur to buy a gun and shoot a few practice rounds, the actual chance of surviving a home invasion attack may not be improved by that much...
but the point is.... the potential invader does NOT know that you do or don't have a gun, how many guns you have, or if you are an expert marksman!
now if guns are banned, then it's like you putting up this sign on your front lawn -
'NO DEFENCE IN THIS HOUSE, COME RIGHT IN!!! '
